If you are a technical director, stagecraft instructor, stagehand, rigger, scenic designer, theatrical carpenter, or just have any inclination of doing anything dealing with theatrical rigging or scenery, this book is a must read.The author did a great job making this an easy read. I come back to this book time and time again, it has even, on more than one occasion, make me want to write my own book, just because of the way I feel after reading a few chapters, confirming my existing knowledge!I've shared this book with ton's of co-workers, students, and stagehands alike.

This book is a strong and straight froward approach to teaching the ideas of theatrical rigging. The section on automated rigging does not offer much insight beyond the concept of replacing the human operator with an automated system which goes in and out on a rail system. If you are a stagehand or part of any technical production team you should have this book in your library.

A great book and a must have for people who are in the industry - or thinking about it.As a Rigging Manager for a theatrical contracting company, I'd suggest this as the go-to book for anyone that works with/around rigging on a stage. Good, solid information that even gives some great information on insider information on safety and inspections.. etc.Worth the price and worth the read.

This is a great book that 200 pages in is still current / valid using Visual Studio 2015 Community, C# 6.0, and Windows 10. Many reviews are pointing out that there's too many references to windows store apps and the exercises aren't working. This is covered in the appendix, where it goes over the WPA framework instead of Windows Store app.I really enjoy the progression the book. You can't really flip to a random page and start reading, and need to work your way through it. An intermediate programmer could probably make it through about 30 pages an hour, and it gives you a good foundation.If you are completely new to programming, I suggest some supplemental materials, such as searching youtube for "C# application creation" that walks you through the form design, and using intellisense. Lynda.com also has some of the best overview courses I've seen for explaining Object Oriented programming,and basic programming fundamentals on loops.

I used to hate all of the "silly" books ("...for Dummies," "...for Idiots," "...in 24 Hours," etc.) on programming. Then I tried "Head First Java" and discovered that there is a difference between "silly" and "appealing." The publishers claim these books incorporate new teaching methods grounded in recent, but established, psychology. (You know, the same claim textbook writers make to justify charging college students hundreds of dollars for new editions of their works every year, even though maybe three pages will actually change from one to the next; this time it's true, but you aren't getting reamed on the price for it). I have to admit they do seem to have found a way to communicate complex subject matter without ignoring important features, while still making it fun and (more importantly) effective reading.As a recent convert from Java to C# (and from about a dozen languages before Java), I have developed the humility necessary to at least skim the parts of the books I use to learn new languages that cover the "obvious" stuff (like the difference between a short and long). But, by doing so in this book, I have found that there are a few C# specifics one might otherwise miss. Yet, the book is so well structured that a real skim (looking each page over, without either reading the whole thing nor just flipping inattentively) tends to be what it takes to find them. So, even though this book is clearly intended to be useful to a beginning programmer, I'd recommend it to someone crossing over from another language.They left out threading, unsafe, and native code, which is fine for a beginner's book. But I have to give it one star off of perfection because it would be possible to include them and they just didn't. Still a very good book.

Definitely recommend it to anyone starting out on C#. Coming from years programming in C++/MFC, some of the objected oriented descriptions were rudimentary, but I still read through them to review and found the style of how it presents the concepts to be good. The "mood" of the text is light and easy to read. For me, it worked best as a paper version, where you can flip between pages, versus the e-book (which I viewed via our local library before buying it). Personally wished it covered WPF as the primary programming model instead of WinForms. The way it's handled as an addendum is a bit awkward, but workable.

This book is now somewhat obsolete. It has not been updated to keep up with changes in the relevant tools and technology. It shows a copyright of 2013. If a reader can get an old version of Visual Studio he could work through the exercises, but the current Visual Studio does not operate as the book describes. This could still be a valuable learning tool; just understand what you're buying.

I am now on page 332 of this book. I picked the book up around 12 days ago. This book is HANDS DOWN my FAVORITE text book I've ever read. EVER...Just open the book up and look... Unlike most boring computer programming books, this one has TONS of drawings, notes, captions, pictures, and other intriguing little tid-bits on EVERY SINGLE PAGE. I've never seen a text-book that is jam-packed with as many little side-notes, useful hints, and illustrations. The authors of this book clearly consulted professional research when they wrote the blueprint for how this book was going to be presented.Another extremely important thing is... It's accurate. VERY accurate. Despite the book being written in 2013, I am using Visual Studio 2015 and have yet to encounter any problems whatsoever. The authors provided workarounds for version differences in the appendix but you barely even have to use them. If you do, they are written just as well, with all of the same illustrations, as the main pages in the book. I haven't even seen ONE little typo in this book, which is extremely important for a programming guide. Great job!Honestly, this book has pretty much left me speechless otherwise... It's THAT good. I haven't programmed a single line of code since I was 13 years old, I'm now 27 and I read half the book in a couple weeks and completed every exercise so far. Thanks to this book, I am easily able to write up my own code and understand most people's code.But perhaps the best part of the book is not that it teaches you C#... It teaches you how to THINK like programmer. Being a programmer is much more than just knowing the language. This book teaches you how to draw up class diagrams, plan out your programs with optimal structure, and most importantly, it gives you assignments and you have to FIGURE THEM OUT. This is how programming professionally is. It's not reading some boring book, memorizing syntax, and then just toying around. You have to be able to convert someone else's ideas and designs into a working product and that is what this book has you doing.I see some negative reviews on here... I honestly don't get it. Yeah, maybe if you're a seasoned programmer you may not like it because it may bore you. But if you're a seasoned programmer, what the heck are you doing buying a book entitled "Head First C#" in the first place? Clearly, this book is written for beginners. This book would also benefit experienced programmers who are new to objected-oriented programming.I would not buy this book solely to use as a reference, it is not written as a reference. Instead, you'd be better getting C# 6.0 in a Nutshell: The Definitive Reference.

An unusual adventure, thriller fantasy about novelist Thomas Hunter who finds himself in a semi-paradise whenever he dreams that is so real that he believes that this world is the dream, except when he dreams in that world and wakes up in this. From going back and forth, he finds himself instrumental in both worlds -- instrumental in their salvation and damnation -- even as he learns increasingly of their connection. That's as much as a spoiler as I'll provide. Bad points: Characterizations are rather weak, descriptions of the other world are almost cartoonish, action and plot are pretty unbelievable, and I didn't like how God was portrayed. It is a little too much like how many like to view God: like a sweet innocent child who likes to cavort about. One other thing, I don't like cliff hangers, which this story is. Yet, for all of its faults, I still liked it and am contemplating reading the next in The Circle.

This is the first book in what is one of my favorite series. Whether you are reading it for the first time or reading it again, you will be mesmerized. It reminds me of a modern Chronicles of Narnia with a grown-up twist. I couldn't recommend the series more. I would recommend you read Black first.

This is a great book for people who like fantasy and science fiction. The story opens with a few men discussing how to create a virus that will kill everyone and then making countries pay for the antivirus. Then the story changes to Thomas Hunter in Denver. He injures his head and when he blacks out or sleeps he dreams he is in a different reality. This reality is so real that it makes Denver feel like a dream. I won't say more because it will spoil the book. I am now reading the second book; Red, and enjoying it as well.

Thomas Hunter, a want-to-be writer, is living a life that bounces back and forth between two worlds. One is real and the other is a dream, but which is which. Or are they both real. At the same time? Are the events in each tied together somehow or are they truly independent of each other? So many questions to ask by individuals in each “world”, yet the answers don’t make sense, or do they? The ending comes up abruptly and then again it isn’t really the end.Does Thomas encounter God and if so is that one reality heaven? Read and judge for yourself.

Only my second five star review. Creative concept involving someone living in two different time periods during "dreams", which turn out to be interconnected realities and not dreams. Love the theological concepts woven into the plot during the future time period, which reminded me a lot of a Garden of Eden in which God lives in close relationship to God's creation until the patriarch gives into temptation. I immediately started reading the sequel "Red".

I had a bit of a hard time getting into the book at the beginning with the jumps from world to world (I'm not THAT fond of sci-fi) but once I adapted to the story line and crossover to the other world, this book (and the ones that follow) really grabbed me! I love the way Dekker paints a picture of Gods amazing love for us. That God would love after the betrayal and denial is so amazing and such a difficult concept. We typically try to put God into a human box and if God was like us, by the time we come around to even looking into who He really is, we'd have blown it past any hope of redemption. But these books really show you in a powerful way that God is not to be boxed into our human frame. He may be a lion, a lamb or a boy... And that our sin really hurts God but that He makes a way. Definitely a 5 star story.

I've read every novel Ted Dekker has written (and will continue to do so). Every time a new one comes out, I hope it'll be better than his older novels, and am slightly disappointed when they aren't. I'm sure there are people who will disagree, but I think Dekker's older novels (Circle Trilogy, Martyr's Song Trilogy, Thr3e & Obsessed) are the best he's written. Don't get me wrong: I like all of Dekker's novels, but my favorites are his older ones. I bought the Circle Trilogy a few years ago, read it, then sold it to fund my voratious book reading habit. Recently I regretted selling them, and just purchased another set that I will NEVER sell! Dekker's next novels - a six series set, is loosely tied to the Circle Trilogy, and so I'll be reading them again before his next books come out in February 2008.Buy the Circle Trilogy and enjoy some of the best Dekker has ever written.

This book is just OK when studying for he CPAN test. It is a bit hard to follow because it is in “outline” format. Found the Drains book to be much more informative and easier to read.

This is a beautiful book. It is a paper back printed on heavy glossy card stock. The subject of each figure is identified and his or her position in the Gospels is briefly described. Details of interest in each subject are noted with pointers.

I need a magnifying glass to read parts of this. The font size is very small in places.

I bought this for someone who likes to go to art museums, and she really liked it. She said that the information in this book will help her to enjoy and understand religious artwork more.

If you are like me, your familiarity with many Biblical subjects leaves much to be desired. I am usually OK with the standards -the Adoration of the Magi, the Last Supper - and so forth. But even there, many of the small details elude me. For example, I didn't know that red carnations are associated with the Passion because the shape of their seeds recalls the nails used for the crucifixion, or that when Jesus was presented at the Temple, Mary and Joseph gave a gift of two doves, which can often be seen in paintings of this event, or that Mary Magdalene is frequently depicted bareheaded to recall that she had dried Christ’s feet with her own hair. And when we get to events such as the Parable of the Lost Coin, the Marriage of the Virgin, or the Supper in the House of Simon, my understanding goes downhill fast. The list could go on and on.If this sounds at all like you, then Stefan Zuffi's Gospel Figures in Art is, literally, a godsend. Originally written in Italian, but translated and published in English by the Getty Museum as part of their Guide to Imagery series, it consists of numerous short sections each devoted to a single event from the Gospels. Each section is illustrated by several paintings with concise explanations of the people, imagery, and iconography therein. Armed with this volume, anyone will have much greater success "reading" Christian art of the Renaissance or of any other period. My only nitpick, as others have pointed out, is the small size of the reproductions and type font, which make some kind of magnifier almost manditory.

In "Guide to Imagery Series" books I found the books on artthat give an exceptionally clear presentation of the subject.I bought 6 books from this series ("Gospel figures in art" among them) and I really found what I was searching for. You can study Old and New Testament as well as ancient mythology reading these books, understand the role of different details, symbols drawn on each picture. Inside each book there is a short description of the specific topic followed by full-colour reproductions of the pictures on this topic from different museums all over the world with detailed explanations to each picture. It was amazing to find and understand the meaning of different pictures I saw in art galleries in St.Petersburg, Berlin, Munich, Dresden, Venice, Naples and other places. Really a great selection of art works is presented in each of these books. I strongly recommend all these books to everybody who wants to understand the meaning of the pictures and get a nice art collection at home.

If you think you know the gospels (the first 4 books of the New Testament), this book will open your eyes. If you think you know Western art, this book will teach you things you never knew you didn't know. Every incident in the gospels, as well as every incident that has grown up as a traditional addition to the gospels, is touched on. Then a large number of paintings are beautifully reproduced and annotated in detail. You can think of this book either as illustrating the gospels in detail, or explicating every detail of Western painting based on the gospels. A sheer delight. A wonderful treasure.
