I have always loved Hollywood portraits, from George Hurrell to Bert Stern, close ups of such beautiful faces are studies of unequalled beauty, that you never tire of looking at. Growing up in the sixties, I saw a new gendre of gorgeous photography- the Record Album Cover. The first album cover that I fell in love with, was of The Doors 1967 debut album. I found out that the photographer was a talent like no other named Guy Webster. Guy is in a category all his own. He captures the raw close up of the stars face, only unlike Hurrell's airbrushing of the imperfections, the freckles and imperfections are left to see.For lovers of the gorgeous 60's album covers or of the 60's Hollywood stars, this large book has it all. These photographs embody all the beauty of the sixties, close up, in large breathtaking portraits and scenes. Guy Webster not only captures the details of the stars in their close up portraits, he captures their very essence. The same goes for his fantastic album covers- you can almost feel the sunlight coming through the trees in his Simon and Garfunkel photos for the album Sounds Of Silence. I will list some of the famous people who are magnificently portrayed on these large pages that simply take your breath away. As if the photos aren't enough, Guy also has many comments from what he recalls of his photo shoots with the 60's most gorgeous people, as well as some of the star's comments. I've read this book more than once. In simple language, it explains the complex world of the Mongolian Genghis Khan.Best for 4th or 5th grade level readers.

The print is so small and light I can't even begin to read it. Even some of the figures are too small. It's too bad because it could have ben an enjoyable book and I might have bought others in the series.

I'm not sure why, but every word with "fl" or "fi" is missing those letters. Also, although the pictures seem nice, they are very small, and you can't enlarge them. So, not a very good Kindle book. Maybe the hard back is better. The story and picture are nice, just not suitable for ebook.

Just know if you read this to children you will have some graphic scenes come up. I enjoyed it as a historical piece and learned something new!

This was very well illustrated and written. I love Demi's work and I am sure you will too! It was great even in kindle.

Read it in one sitting yesterday -- I love Dennis Lehane's writing. Different from a lot of his other work, but the guy has range, and isn't afraid to branch out and try something new. Can't understand these people who are brutalizing him for "straying" from the Patrick Kenzie formula that made him famous. I like the variety, and thought he did a good job with a female protagonist. There are some fairly long paragraphs dealing with Rachel's psychological torment, and I occasionally thought of Elmore Leonard ("I try to leave out the parts that people skip") but they do add to the story, even when a little long. Maybe those who are expressing disappointment are missing the nonstop thriller/action/adventure motif of his early work, but the guy isn't cooking Big Macs, he's writing novels! This is something new and different, but so what? The test is, "Do I stay up late to finish the thing because I can't put it down?" And the answer here is an unqualified yes.

The old Dennis Lehane is back. Thank goodness SINCE WE FELL is not another of his historical mafia books. Looks like he’s done with those.But SINCE WE FELL doesn’t begin like one of Lehane’s older novels. The first half of this book is a study of Rachel, the main character. It does not grip the reader almost immediately, as you might have expected of Lehane before his mafia books.Instead, we learn of Rachel’s discontent with her mother, who refuses to tell Rachel who her father is/was. Eventually, Rachel looks for him on her own. This leads to her initial meeting with Brian, a supposed private detective, who refuses to take her money for a job he knows he can’t do.We also learn a lot more about Rachel, maybe more than we need to know sometimes. For various reasons, though, she is frequently afflicted with panic attacks. They disrupt her life so much that she becomes almost totally housebound.The second half of SINCE WE FELL is Lehane as we used to expect. Now we come to know Brian better. Is he all that he seems? Who is he, really?There’s more plot to the second half. But the character study in the first half is what makes the book more than a plot-driven thriller.

Mystic River was one of my favorite novels of its time. And I was on board for the Patrick Kenzie and Angela Gennaro series—for a while, until I felt that Lehane was phoning it in. His stand-alone Live By Night wasn’t up to the standard of The Given Day, either. But I am glad I took a chance on this new and vital (and also stand-alone), SINCE WE FELL (look up the one-hit wonder song). This book is, in my opinion, his very best, and demonstrates that he is at the epitome of his talent as a writer. Get ready for a big, brilliant bombshell of a story. You’ll want to call in sick—it is immersive, cinematic, lovingly written-- unputdownable.I am not going to give spoilers, even minor ones. Every new discovery made me tighten my jaw a bit more, and there were plenty of white-knuckle moments, especially in the latter half of the book. However, I was also deeply connected from the beginning, due to Lehane’s acumen for building complexity through character. What Lehane did was fuse character development with plot, both necessary and integral to the book as a whole. Rachel Childs, the fractured and caring journalist, is the fascinating protagonist, and as complex a character as you will ever meet in a suspense story. But even secondary characters in this novel have their own unique imprint—no one was generic or glazed over. The steady burn in the first 200 pages is crucial to installing the reader and hooking you into the story, preparing you for a compelling and superb completion. Every. Character. Is. Believable. Figuratively and literally, Rachel is still searching for her father, and suffering with psychological issues and a cauterized spirit stemming from his departure and her mother’s controlling and often bitter tongue throughout her life. Trust is not easily gained for Rachel. And, after a journalistic trip to Haiti, the troubles intensify.The novel covers themes that work together, in tandem and flawlessly—highlighting abandonment, betrayal, friendship, PTSD, and none so potent a motif as love and trust. This is the kind of love story that can go any which way, and I won’t tell you which way it goes. Of course, the first line of the book’s prologue tells you how love can go wrong.“On a Tuesday in May, in her thirty-fifth year, Rachel shot her husband dead.”That can be a tough act to follow for a lesser talent, but Lehane kicks it up more than a few notches as the story progresses. I was caught up with clenched fists almost every step of the way. There are characters that you warm to, and others you love to hate, but you will be engulfed by events as character and plot move the story forward. Just be patient. This isn’t like the Kenzie novels, with fast action page after page, and it is as much character-driven as plot-driven. They inhabit the narrative hand-in-hand, which I can’t restate enough. And there are moments, events, and dialogues that grip you to the end. As Rachel’s mother warned her on page two:“A man is the stories he tells about himself, and most of these stories are lies. Never look too closely. If you uncover his lies, it’ll humiliate you both. Best to just live with the bull#%*^.”Read it and leap!

This book starts off slow, drags you through Rachel's assorted dysfunctions at a tedious pace, starts to get interesting at around the halfway mark when you think there might be a plot starting to happen, gets ridiculously implausible, then lands with a thud.There are a number of directions Lehane could have taken with this story. Could have made Rachel crazy and hallucinating. Could have made her a hero who does the right thing. Instead he made her another one of those weak pointless women who seem to be all the rage these days in fiction. Here's a SPOILER so you don't waste your money just to find out I was correct in my assessment:Brian has assumed not one, but many fake identities. He is a con man with an elaborate plan to steal millions and leave the country with his equally fake partner, who has a con man wife that he didn't realize was conning him. Rachel, despite everything Brian has put her through, both emotionally and physically, goes along with him.I feel like Lehane is laughing at me for giving him money for this insulting trash, but rest assured it will be the last dime of mine he sees.

Flawed characters are fun characters as I like to say, and our boy Ryker has some serious issues. If anyone has read Mr. Arand's previous stories before then they are probably familiar with his style and this book doesn't break the trend. We have the base of power, the sexy sidekicks, and a whole slew of problems slamming themselves at our MC one after another that he deals with in a rather ruthless manner (Ryker is honestly a trip to read about, he is very unconventional in most of his approaches.)The book itself is a good length but the fast pace and constant action makes it go by fairly quickly, our author seems to favor a more streamlined and action packed plot which I tend to enjoy.All in all a very good book that's great to kill a few hours with. Pick it up, you won't be disappointed.Also need to say that the book is very well edited. I noticed very few, if any, errors and none of them broke the flow of the story. I know this is an issue with a lot of indie books so I thought I should note it.

Mary Sue wish-fulfillment writing at it's worst. A power fantasy of someone wanting revenge, where literally every woman the protagonist meets wants to have sex with him while he, a petty, spiteful man, wants to murder everybody who screwed him over in the past. There is no explanation given for how exactly Ryker managed to find a dungeon core, or why nobody has ever done what he has done before, which is even more unbelievable. Flat characters, unlikable protagonist and an interesting idea which turns into blatant wish-fulfillment.

**Some Spoilers Ahead**Another excellent book from Monsieur Arand. I found the characters to be fleshed-out and most interesting, which can be a rarity with harem literature. I especially like the thought put unto developing the idea of a dungeon core as well as the various utilities associated. The book also introduced one of my favorite female characters, Meino.I'll be terribly disappointed in the series if she is not subsumed by his harem. I also like the plot twist at the end, but am hoping for a less linear resolution than what is normally seen. I find Claire intriguing, and hate to see most politically-savvy characters written into predictable power-grabs, ultimately resulting in their untimely demise. Not saying it will happen, but only the author knows. So, here's my vote against it.P.S. Meino for Ryker's harem queen (or co-queen, albeit grudgingly).

This is my first book review ever. I'd like to keep it simple and spoiler free. I've read most if not all of William's books and the first thing I can say is give this one a fair chance. It started off slow for me, and did not grab my attention as quickly as his other books. That being said when I finally got like 25% into it I was hooked. I finished the book in a day. Initially Ryker did not draw my interest. He comes across as a very jaded selfish man holding onto grudges long past. Throughout the book it became clear while jaded and full of flaws there is still a lot to love about him. The concept of the dungeon and all it's tricks and turns was a delight. Odd feeling rooting for a hero hell bent on other's deaths. If you like the unconventional romance in his other books it once again shines in Dungeon Deposed. Like all Willam's books it left me craving more. Just remember give it a fair chance!

This is an interesting change from some of his other series. Initially, I wasn't happy with the main character, as he was self-absorbed and consumed with keeping a grudge and revenge for those slights; which in turn made for some unsavory actions by the main charactert. I stuck with the story, though, and it was worthwhile. Mr Arand shows that these type of choices have repercussions, and forcing the main character to re-evaluate his choices and obsession.This is a harem style tale, and it is the female monsters and humans that help him begin his movement toward redemption. Still not a nice guy at the end, but a man of his word, and becoming better because of the people he himself has drawn into his life. The ending, too, was a surprise. Not a fan, though of cliffhangers, so I expect Mr Arand to write the follow up story SOON. Recommended.

William Arend just keeps getting better. He's definitely maturing as an author and has become one of my favorite new ones. He develops complex new worlds with wild adventures for the "hero" to undertake (and with definite, but largely non-graphic, sex along the way - these are "adult" novels, not juvenile PG romances, so reader discretion is advised) but his characters have gradually become deeper and more complicated in their personalities, so now I'm having to go back and re-read sections of his recent books, which I don't do for most authors except ones I enjoy. I've read nearly all of his books and the later ones are more enjoyable due to their richer and more complicated characterization.Dungeon Deposed is a good example of this trend in his writing. At first it just seems like a conventional dungeon romp with a mildly dark twist of the hero seeking revenge for being wronged, but as the story develops, we see additional characters appear, each with their own agendas and our hero has to balance these off with his own goals to the point that by the end of the book he's having to defer his own desires to do in one of his earlier oppressors for the greater good. He's created a very human individual in a fantasy setting who has to deal with the consequences of his choices, and the personalities of several of the secondary characters have developed to the point that they're not cardboard either (I got invested in the fate of several of them, like "Ms. Foulmouth" and her politically wise cousin; I hope they make it in subsequent stories). Neither they nor our "hero" are very nice folks, but they're far from evil and it's a rough world Mr. Arend's drawn, so we can root for them in their struggles. We know that the hero's still going to win, but how he does is what makes the story gripping. Let's have some more, Mr. Arend!
