So, this set of six waterproof cards costs about $5 and shows you how to tie knots. Simple. The cards are the size of a regulation deck of playing cards, and each is about 1/132" thick. The plastic stock is flexible, and feels well-constructed. A brass grommet is punched through the top left corner to keep the cards together. If you stick two strands of 550 cord (each a different color) through the grommet, you can have cord with you to practice these knots. The knots included are:-Bowline.-Tautline Hitch.-Sheep Shank.-Square Knot.-Water Knot.-Timber Hitch.-Buntline Hitch.-Rolling Hitch.-Clove Hitch.-Constrictor Knot.-Half Hitch.-Sheet Bend.-Prusik Knot.-Double Fisherman's.-Cleath Hitch.-Trucker's Hitch.-Figure Eight.-Mooring Hitch.-Butterfly Knot.-Bowling On a Bight. So, that's twenty knots. For each, there's a brief description of what the knot is used for and about two illustrations. The illustrations are nicely done; they're detailed enough to see what the knot is, with small arrows shown to help you visualize what's going on. When two different pieces of rope are being used (like the Sheet Bend, etc.) there are two different colors of rope shown, so everything is clear. For the five dollar price, these are good cards. A learning tool for some and boredom busters for others, these fulfill their intended purpose. Toss a set in your backpack to get some practice or use your "down time" more easily.

Nicely done!Pros:Printed on stiff plastic cards, making them waterproof;Love that they are attached together by an eyelet, can put a lanyard through the eyelet with practice stringIllustrations are easy to follow.Cons:None.These are great cards to stick in your backpack to have with you on hikes, etc.

Makes the most useful knots so simple and easy. Knots are needed and used frequently by almost everyone. This is a great tool to have handy so your can quickly and easily make the knot right. High quality product with thick plastic and a good rivet swivel holding them together. Easy to read and use. Highly recommended.

Cool little invention. I realize I could go on the internet, print off varying knot schematics, resize to a business card size, laminate, drill a hole and stick a grommet on it to replicate...but why the hassle? This version is MUCH better and sturdier. Hard plastic, not flimsy cards, with the most essential knots ready to go. We grabbed several and disbursed them throughout our 72 hour kits. We have a few reserved for our hiking packs when we do our treks in the wilderness, and we use them for scouting as well. I am happy with the find and the purchase. The only downside is they could have more information on them, but for the price, I feel like I got a good deal.

This was a purchase made for my bug out bag. I was a military brat and my dad a career Navy man, but he never taught us kids squat, so I grew up knowing nothing about ropes and knot-tying. I didn't want to add the bulk of a book to my bug out bag and these cards fit the bill perfectly. Water won't hurt them because they are laminated and they are small and light. Now I can sit down and practice my knots and if push comes to shove, use the cards to show me how.

Look well-built. Printed in China. Slightly larger than a credit card (see photos).I paid $5.31.If this product was priced any higher, I would only give 4 stars because a tiny amount of instructions text is covered, but this is a small issue because no key words seem to hidden (see photos).Sturdy and waterproof, usable even in unfavorable conditions in the outdoors. A slim and compact addition to your EDC/ emergency pouch.I would buy this again, for myself or someone else.

Love these little knot pocket guides! I got a bunch of them so that we could teach our youth group about knots and the kids could take the guide along in their pocket to help them remember the knots. My son used one every day until he had all of the knots memorized and the booklet is still in great condition! I would definitely recommend these!

I got these because I am rusty as could be at my knot tying. Also my son and nephew are in Boy Scouts and I couldn't let them show me up. I have put the cards on a small carabiner and they go everywhere with me when I am camping or hiking. Great reference and easy to understand and read. I even learned a few new knots. I may even go back and order the other series of these that they have. The cards are a hard plastic so that water will not ruin or affect them.

Review

"World's 2018 Books of the Year""Rodgers' superlative book is an intellectual page-turner--a muscular examination of the culture and theology behind the 'Model,' a cogent study of the methods by which a nation gives itself meaning through the inventive interpretation of documents from the past, and a sharp-eyed accounting of how Winthrop's 'city on a hill' phrase came to be used in modern political parlance."---Patrick T. Reardon, Chicago Tribune"In a wonderful new book, As a City on a Hill: The Story of America's Most Famous Lay Sermon, distinguished intellectual historian Daniel Rodgers recaptures Winthrop's original meaning and explains why it's relevant to Americans today. . . . Masterful history."---Robert Tracy McKenzie, Christianity Today"John Winthrop was the preacher, and his chapel may have been the main deck on the ship that took him and other Puritans to Boston in 1630. Much of the sermon is relevant to contemporary issues of work, charity, welfare, and class. . . . His work is a model of clearly written scholarship."---Marvin Olasky, World (25 Good History Reads)"[Daniel Rodgers] argues that the comparison of America to a city on a hill that politicians often use, quoting from John Winthrop's 1630 lay sermon 'Model of Christian Charity,' is not true to the sermon's original sentiment and distorts the historical legacy of the passage. . . . It wasn't until Cold War-era writers and thinkers revisited the 'Model' in search of evidence of America's universal nature (ignoring the text's historical context) that it regained popularity. Through a winding, enthralling timeline, Rodgers successfully illuminates the strange history of 'a text that we think we know so well that we barely know it at all.'" (Publishers Weekly)"A gem of a book. Daniel Rodgers's inquiry into John Winthrop's much-quoted essay challenges a raft of assumptions and brims with insight and provocation. Rodgers has always written intellectual history at its very best: learned, searching, and vital."--Jill Lepore, author of These Truths: A History of the United States"Today, most of us understand John Winthrop's famous phrase, 'a city upon a hill,' to mean that America is the exceptional nation and model for all mankind. But in this brilliant and engaging book, distinguished historian Daniel Rodgers shows how the phrase meant almost the opposite--and how it has been used and misused throughout American history."--Frances FitzGerald, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Fire in the Lake: The Vietnamese and the Americans in Vietnam"In As a City on a Hill, Daniel Rodgers offers a brilliant and much-needed revision to the legend that has been built around John Winthrop's famous sermon. This sharply written and compellingly argued book shows how Winthrop's words, often misread as a precursor to American nationalism, were in fact a call to our responsibilities to build community and nurture mutuality."--E. J. Dionne, coauthor of One Nation after Trump and author of Our Divided Political Heart"Reading As a City on a Hill is an opportunity to be reminded yet again why Daniel Rodgers's work has been so formative for generations of American historians. In captivating prose, he demonstrates beautifully how every present is layered with its past, even in ways hidden to its actors."--Jennifer Ratner-Rosenhagen, author of American Nietzsche"A fine book, As a City on a Hill shows how the multiple meanings of John Winthrop's sermon unfolded, with unexpected developments at every turn, over almost four centuries."--James T. Kloppenberg, the author of Toward Democracy

Since the days of Ronald Reagan, virtually all presidential candidates have spoken of America as a "city on a hill," recycling a biblical phrase which Puritan John Winthrop wove into a once-obscure sermon/pamphlet for the benefit of his fellow builders of the pre-America Massachusetts Bay colony. In the mouths of these recent politicians and pundits Winthrop's plea for charity and his warning about the consequences of failing to build a loving community became instead a cheerleading slogan of American exceptionalism."As a City on a Hill" is a riveting examination of the uses and abuses of history. Historian Daniel T. Rodgers demonstrates in clear and compelling prose how "timeless" texts endure not by staying the same, but because they evolve to meet new needs. By telling the history of Winthrop's text, Rodgers invites American readers to consider that "without an honest and searching account of their pasts, nations are at peril" and, like Winthrop, he invites us to "live as if one's society was under the moral scrutiny of the world." (287)An outstanding intellectual history of the perils and promises of nationalism.

Something seems strange about writing a book about "Winthrop's 'city on a hill' phrase," as the author refers to it, and not mentioning until page 38 that it was actually Jesus' phrase from the Sermon on the Mount. One would hope that the writers of all the review quotes listed above were aware of the phrase's actual origin, but alas, one cannot be sure. The use of Occam's Razor may suggest that much of how twentieth-century America has used this phrase may come not from a reading or misreading of Winthrop's sermon, but directly from Christ's sermon, which was far more familiar to most Americans. Winthrop serves a relatively minor historical role of being the first person to link the phrase to the settlements that became the U.S.

My grandson is almost 8. He is addicted to Minecraft. Although he is an excellent reader, above second grade reading level, he is not fond of reading because he does not find the books interesting. Well I ordered him the entire set of this series. Probably a dumb idea because had he not liked them I would have been stuck with 9 books. Luckily, I judged correctly. For the first time since he had discovered Minecraft, the video game, he was reading rather than playing. It confirmed Grandma's theory that it was not the reading he did not like, it was the subject matter! Yeah Grandma. So the books get 5 starts from both of us.

I have a nephew that really enjoys Minecraft, so I often buy books for him (it's one of the only things that motivates him to read). Most books I've found, especially the free ones, are not fit to be called books. They're scams, overpriced, with grammar mistakes and bad writing.NOT this book. It's not award-winning stuff, but it's a solid read. It tells the story of a Minecraft zombie and his adventures with his friends. In this book, they go on a "scarecation" to explore the jungle biome. They plan to visit a temple and go to the special zombie park for some cool rides. This zombie may not be human (of course), but he is just like any other human kid, getting into trouble and struggling with his mom picking clothes for him. There's a lot of creativity in this book. Creepy, his creeper friend, takes medication so he's less likely to blow up. Also, the zombies buy extra body parts because theirs keep falling off!I recommend this book to any kid who likes Minecraft, especially the reluctant readers.

I'm reading these books aloud to my 6 year old son at bedtime. I bought them to encourage reading instead of playing minecraft (which he also likes to do). He's not totally reading on his own yet, but he does follow along and can figure out some of the words. The book is written like a diary with daily entries, so we can read a couple of days or a whole week, depending on how much time we have. He loves the stories and always asks for more. My 8 year old daughter even listens in sometimes. The writing is nothing spectacular; it's definitely written like a kid would write (and not a particularly witty kid). And the typesetting/production on the book are not too impressive. The few included photos are black and white and hard to see. But it's affordable and my kids like the gross-zombie-booger-body part-type-stuff, so it's a hit. We are on Book 3 now; I've already purchased 4 and 5 as well. We'll read through them together and maybe when my son is older he'll read them on his own. Bonus: I can brush up on minecraft terminology, which earns me some bonus Mom points.

I have purchased the first 4 books of this series and my son loves them. He is 9! They are just the right reading level and they are about minecraft, something he really enjoys. It is one of the few times I do not have to make him read and he enjoys them. He often comes to read me certain sections he finds funny. The only con, they are kind of short. But the price is right!

I bought the three book set for my 10 year old daughter for Christmas because she loves Minecraft and the Diary of a Wimpy Kid books. I actually find her sitting and reading these books instead of playing on her electronics! She laughs out loud while she is reading them and can't wait to tell us all about them. She is not typically a big reader and has had a difficult time finding books that she enjoys other than the Wimpy Kid series, but she loves these! They are a very light read and I don't think there is a lot of substance to the stories, but to see my daughter enjoying a book so much makes it all good.

Really great for my 8 year old!! My sons summer home work was to read 1,000 minutes - he has not put up one fight about reading since we bought these !! He is super excited about them! I couldn't tell you if the writing is good or not but for a video gaming 8 year old boy he is loving it and laughing out loud ! We are getting the rest that's for sure ! Thank you thank you Zack Zombie !

I bought these for my daughter who just turned 10 because she is a minecraft fanatic. She finished each book in about 30-45 minutes. Could be a little cheaper considering they are not very long book, but still worth it to me long as my little girl is reading.

My 6 year old can't get enough of these books. He reads and re-reads them. He loves Minecraft and this was the only way I figured out to GRT him to put down the game controller and to read. He is now on his 7th Minecraft diary of a Zombie book. He loves them. I read these with him as well at bedtime and I admit they are cleaver and funny even for an adult. Well written with a good story.
