This 14th-century adventure book is surprisingly sweet and innocent, considering it includes scenes of battle, privation, and death. Originally published in 1949, and winner of a Newbery award, the story feels dated compared to books published more recently about medieval children's lives. It contains lots of factual tidbits about castles, transportation, monastic life, warfare, and other topics, carefully woven into the tale. A few of these seem anachronistic, such as the song Robin sings for the king - a song actually only a couple of hundred years old. But in fairness, more is known today about historical accuracy than was known seventy years ago. Robin is an appealing character, though he's at the far end of the curve in pushing himself to do tasks that are difficult or dangerous for him. The men who sometimes carry him and his crutches on their backs seem astoundingly strong, schlepping the ten-year-old up and down hills and stairs and towers without tiring; this I found somewhat unbelievable. But Brother Luke's mantra, "Thou hast only to follow the wall long enough and there will be a door in it," is as insightful and useful today as it was for Robin.

I'm so happy that we picked this edition for a gift, it looks better than the picture provided, it doesn't have that Laurel Leaf Newberry line down at the bottom. The story is, of course, fantastic as well as the illustrations! This was a great buy at a great price!

Great book. A timeless classic.Perfect for kids with a high reading level, but who are not old enough to be reading young adult novels.

Another hard to find book found right here. Thank you

It’s an exciting adventure without being geared too much toward one gender or the other. She says it’s a great read and loved it so much she chose it for a book report.

Delightful, low-key, descriptively lean account of England circa the 1330s through the eyes of a handicapped boy. Not the action adventure some readers seem to be expecting, but a non-revisionist slice of life, Middle Ages style. Younger readers will need to be good readers, and patient ones, to reap these rewards. (In fact, that's what this book is about!)De Angeli's short Newbery winner follows Robin, ten year old son of a nobleman fighting in Edward III's "Scottish wars" and one of the Queen's ladies-in-waiting. Robin's London caregivers are wiped out by the plague, so the care of his delicate health (he has recently been stricken lame) falls to a benevolent monk named Brother Luke. The good brother quietly applies himself to strengthening Robin in both body and mind, emphasizing that perseverance and patience will always result in finding "a door in the wall," a way beyond present obstacles. Robin's lessons include wood carving, reading, writing, singing and playing music, swimming, and walking with crutches. There is no insistent plot to jerk the story forward and no loud, overstated characters to interfere with Robin's quiet development. Robin shares some mild adventures on the road in the company of Luke and a minstrel named John Go-in-the-wynd before all his newfound resourcefulness and skill are called upon in defense of a local castle.Nice, pleasant, quick. Unapologetic about the era's Christian culture and the benevolence of its priests, so probably not very popular among trendy Newbery spokespeople these days. But De Angeli's message of gentle, humble perseverance is actually inspiring.

Kids with disabilities, especially ones like Asperger's Syndrome that are only partially disabling, have trouble figuring out what to make of their disability. They often have to choose between being held to a high standard they can't achieve, and getting the "pity treatment" from people who think disability means they can never achieve anything. Their interactions with adults mostly model those two extremes. They don't often get a chance to think about their disability as it is, with its advantages and disadvantages, or get instruction customized to their strengths as well as their needs.Robin, the protagonist of _The Door In The Wall_, deals with the same struggle all disabled kids do-- trying to find what he *can* do in a world where his abilities don't quite match up with the set of qualities his society values. He is taught to strengthen himself in all the ways he can, and eventually he finds a way to use his disability to his advantage: *only* a disabled boy with his skill set could do what he did.My son with Asperger's has really enjoyed this book for the way it portrays disabilities, and after reading it we've had many discussions about how the disadvantages of Asperger's are the flip side of its advantages. (For example, Asperger's trades off the ability to engage in social interaction for the ability to absorb and recall a large body of information; the latter can be a tremendous advantage and perhaps even lead to future employment.) _The Door In The Wall_ has encouraged my son to view himself in a positive light, disability and all, and find activities that play to his unconventional strengths.

The book was really interesting. My son is reading it at school. It helped to bring it to life with the sound effects and songs!

Growing up fat is complicated, far more complicated than it needs to be. I was a fat kid and I am now 56. At some point in my 30's I realized that the endless dieting cycles of losing and gaining and losing and hating myself was much worse for me than the extra weight. Everyone who was a fat kid, has a fat kid, works with fat kids (hey teachers and DOCTORS -- I'm talking to you) needs to read this book. While the emotional aspects of the book were indeed heartbreaking, I was really pissed off by how, in some instances medical problems unrelated to weight (asthma, Type 1 diabetes) were overlooked because the problems were blamed on solely on weight. In the last 15 years I've had a couple of doctors neglect to address some important health concerns because my extra 30 lbs was like a fire that needed extinguishing. I will be sending them this book with a note attached.

This is a really, really great book. It gives so much insight into what life can be like as a fat kid and how those experiences affect so many aspects of people's lives. It also gives a great deal of science about being fat and things that I think a lot of people would rather ignore. It's a must read for anyone who was a fat kid, or who has fat kids.

Like salve to my wounds from a war on obesity, I didn't want to put this book down. This war did not just start recently, I've been feeling it's effects for a lifetime. Only now, in my 50s, am I beginning to heal. If you were a fat kid, know a fat kid, are fat right now, or would just love a good read, don't hesitate. You will love it.

Opened the book not knowing what to expect. I couldn't put it down. The heart breaking stories brought tears to my eyes. Being fat is not an easy life to live in this society. Reading the book helped me see that I Thank you Rebecca for writing a very insightful book.

Fat Kids: Truth and Consequences is a must-read for anyone who works with children, whether parent, teacher, doctor, nurse or other care-giver. Insightful and well written, this book compassionately highlights the need for more sense when dealing with kids and weight. I highly recommend purchasing this book.

So much of what passes for "helping" fat children consists of throwing them under the bus and blaming them for getting tire tracks on their clothes. This book is testimony to what happens when parents, teachers and even doctors try to protect their children by taking actions that damage their kids way more than the thing they are trying to protect against. This is a collection of experiences and interviews, plus one very useful perspective from psychologist Peggy Elam, Ph.D on how a whole industry grew up around "fixing" fat kids--“Collateral Damage in the ‘War on Obesity’.” Many of the experiences were heart-rending, but I strongly believe that it's important to respect and listen to what actually happens to people, particularly when their experiences are consistently devalued. I would urge reading through to the end because the interview with Daniel Pinkwater rounds out the collection (pun optional) with a delightful attitude that made me smile. I was given a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review, and I can genuinely recommend it to anyone who wants to really understand this issue that causes so much hysteria.

I went through a wide range of emotion as I read this book. I was a little nervous as I started reading because I have my own “fat kid stories” from when I was a child. I do believe that most of it was me being hard on myself, but they range from having my best friend in Kindergarten tell me that her mother said I had an eating problem to my ex’s grandmother saying to her husband “My, Rebecca has certainly plumped up.” I think many of us have our stories and it stems from living in a society that puts so much focus on the subject of weight, and more importantly, ideal weight = health, fitness, and beauty. But by the end of the book, I found more of an acceptance of myself than I thought I would. The underlying message is a strong one, and one that we don’t hear very often: what we weight should not define who we are.Weinstein does an excellent job of expressing all the emotion and heartache that people go through as they struggle with this topic. I was very appreciative of the teaching attitude she presented as opposed to attempting to prove some point about weight. I felt that I learned more about this societal attitude and about my own attitude towards myself thanks to this book. The stories are heart wrenching and are well told. Bullying is a problem that many of us deal with while in school (and even in the workplace now) and one of the common targets is weight. I think that’s because our media, entertainment, healthcare system, and even government put such an emphasis on it.I strongly encourage you to read this book, regardless of your opinions on the subject matter. Not only is it educational, but it encourages empathy and acceptance from yourself towards yourself.

I find this book to be an interesting little conundrum: certainly one would think that the author would have been guilty of violating that part of their obligation to “not print, paint, stamp, [etc.]” the secrets of Freemasonry (see page 34 of the present volume), but I am very glad he did so.As a Masonic writer and researcher, it is my desire to discuss the rituals of Masonry with the general population, but as a Freemason myself, I am bound under a similar obligation to not reveal the particulars of the ritual with which I was initiated. This little book is the answer to that paradox! Those who know will recognize this as an authentic Masonic ritual which, though being outdated and somewhat archaic, retains the morals and flavor of the modern Work. On the other hand, it reveals significant differences from that of my jurisdiction, allowing me to reference and quote passages of ritual without going back on my word. In fact, although it all has the same general content, even the specifics of modern Masonic ritual vary greatly between territories (such as states or countries, each of which potentially having a different Grand Lodge that has jurisdiction over the area) meaning that this ritual--all rituals in fact, even the one I am familiar with--would not be universally applicable as Masonic Tradition requires that the ritual must conform to that of the local Grand Lodge and be as word-perfect as humanly possible. (Don’t believe me? Read page 147 of the present volume.)Thus, one could rightly deduce that this book would be useless for someone trying to impersonate a Freemason or gain admission into a lodge without being initiated. Indeed, modern technology allows us to keep detailed records and provide written proof of membership which the pretender will be conspicuously without (I have personally barred such imposters from lodge for this very reason). Furthermore, it is thus also useless for Masons who want to better learn their own ritual. It is my own personal belief that the Masonic Work should remain as much of an oral tradition as the modern sensibility will allow. As is evidenced by performers, the vast majority of humanity has the potential to memorize ponderous amounts of data with a high level of accuracy, but with the ready availability of books and computers, we rarely do so. But how empowering is it, both exoterically and esoterically, to succeed in this task!In conclusion, I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in the history of the ritual of Freemasonry and to members who would like to quote it without breaking their obligation. To me, it is a Godsend! I would also recommend it to anyone who is related to a Mason and wants to better understand that man’s involvement in the order. Concerning the Dover edition: as is my general experience with this publisher, it is sufficiently well-produced and affordable, making it similarly recommended.

As a Master Mason, I value having a Masonic library and studying Masonic texts. If you, a Mason, desire to improve your understanding, I highly recommend this text. To those seeking to learn the so-called secrets of Freemasonry without becoming a member, you do a disservice to yourselves, and will lack a proper understanding of the heart of Freemasonry.

Best way for you to learn the ins and outs of your craft. Do yourself a favor and get this ritual. Knowledge is key to everything.

Every Mason should have read this book

my favorite part is that it is available on Kindle

This variation on Masonic monitors was dated even for its day, and is most interesting for the inevitable differences found across geographic areas at that time. It's still an interesting read and several of the illustrations are unique.Masons will find the differences with today's ceremonies mildly distracting. At the same time I was impressed how the overall feel has been maintained over time. Even more valued to me is that the reader is given the opportunity to understand the reasons for the symbols and ritual. For the interested non-Mason I think you'll find interesting insights into ceremonies that are intended to bring men together for common cause. It's easy for many to focus on the details of the ceremonies as outlined in Monitors like this. But do some comparative reading with this text and you'll appreciate the psychology of self-discovery through fraternity with good people. One good subject for comparative reading is Simon's Standard Masonic Monitor.I very much encourage casual readers to this text. Scholars are encouraged to seek out original editions provided by credentialed antiquarian bookdealers.

Very informative. Glad I bought this book. Highly recommend for every Freemason.

It’s great for an E.A. Or any of the first 3 degrees on his travels...a ton of great info and study material. 🕍👁⚰️📐🔯🔺
