Thomas leaned more toward the esoteric East than the "law & order" Roman West. I wish I had been taught from this book instead of :"Jesus died for you, you disgusting little worm." Seeking the Light inside so you can see the Light in others is a much more inviting outlook & philosophy than the Black & White dichotomy taught by most christian sects. Imagine church fathers were terrified their sheep would wander away, so they called this a heresy and tried to destroy all copies. And look at where christian churches are today...millionaire politicians preaching hate.I very much appreciate Jean-Yves LeLoup's interpretations of each logion. I'll stick with the gnostics who sought Truth instead of Law & Order millionaires to lead them to the Light.

This gospel is like a collection of nomothetic, gnostic Zen Koans. An enlightened person is trying to help out us deluded humans. I have returned to it many times during my life. Now I read a page every evening, and try to figure out what it might mean. The first page is easy but, after that it require more nonlinear, experiential thinking.

After reading the sample, it took many months for me to finally purchase. The book is fascinating.Another perspective of some familiar sayings of Jesus /Yeshua,and some not found in the Canon. For seekers of spiritual knowledge a must read.The authors translation, and insight made this a memorable read,one that will keep me thinking about the now,how important it is that all God's children (that would be everyone on earth)should love one another...5 stars

This is one of those books that will become a reference in my personal library. The Gospel of Thomas, and the author's interpretation, offers a perspective on the teachings of Jesus that is often radically different from Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.

The very last comment attributed to Jesus shows why this gospel didn't make the cut. Another gospel that has good commentary and a fresh look atsome of the phrases and saying that have been attributed to Jesus. Any and all about the time when the writers were not literate and the thingsthey wrote about contains the oral tradition help give one a new perspective. How can the gospels be accurate descriptions of events that took place 70-100 years before they were written.

This book brought me close to Jesus, or Yeshua as he is called here, in a way I never knew I could be. Finally, the parables and teachings are accessible in sensitive and direct poetic discourse. Thank you!

I wish all biographies were morelike this, although this book is not strictly a biography. What I mean is that the focus is on the achievements and significance of the remarkable central character, Eadweard Muybridge. It was Muybridge's photographic work that led to the development of modern cinema, which Slonit recognizes as "splitting the second" and therefore as significant as splitting the atom. In the hands of a less skill author, a central character as eccentric as Muybridge could easily have overtaken the narrative. I mean he did kill a guy in a jealous rage. But the murder, the insanity defense and the legally impossible jury verdict are all contained in a single chapter. The larger story, the technological development of the 19th century, continues. We also get a close look at Leland Stanford, the beginning of the transcontinental railroad and the early history of San Francisco, although I did feel Slonit sometimes strained to connect the camera, the railroad and California into a coherent story. This is the first book I have read by this author, but it won't be the last. I was really blown away by this.

I read Ms.Solnit's book after learning that it had inspired actor/director Gary Oldman to write a screenplay called Flying Horse, with an eye toward directing the film about photo pioneer Eaweard Muybridge. RIVER OF SHADOWS is a meandering but thoughtfully entertaining journey through the energetic, sometimes tragic life of Eaweard Muybridge whose motion-study images were midwife to modern cinema. Solnit grandly sets the stage of Muybridge's era and how the lure of the early photographic process gave the Englishman a new career and a fresh start. His whole-hearted embrace of the burgeoning technology continues to impact us and our perception of time via motion pictures and all forms of emerging visual media. The book title's reference to the "technological wild west" is so appropriate by guiding us through the historical cloud of dust kicked up by an America of the late 1800s with its growing railroads, vanishing cowboys and struggling native tribes, to reveal how science was a significant part of the rough and tumble mix.

Not the most scintillating writing I've ever read, but an eye-opening story of an artist (Muybridge) whose work helped shape our world. In fact, before reading this book, I took him entirely for granted and did not even consider him an "artist", just a photographer who took pictures of things in motion. He is a heck of a lot more than that, and his photographs are beautiful! The book also gave me (a foreigner who did not study the history of the formation of the west) a glimpse at the fascinating and almost incredible history of the formation of San Francisco, and at how truly rapidly this country developed the roots of what it is today (for better and for worse). This should be required reading in history classes.

Soltnit is a fascinating and able guide in ways that give a good name to intellectual associative writing: she knows how to do it without sounding anything but genuine in her interests, and she lets those interests guide her (and your) path through multiple topics, without ever losing her place or forgetting her subject in the 'so doing' thereof. Highly entertaining and very smart. .

The author gives insight into a variety of things beside Muybridge... the beginning of the book is about perceptions of time and how it was changed by the railroad. But this book is rich in history and understanding the West.

Solnit's RIVER OF SHADOWS is an entrance not only into the 19th century, but also a precursor of the 20th century and the advent of technology. She tells the story of Eadweard Muybridge and the invention of the moving picture. The value of this exceptional book, however, is the relationship presented between technology and culture, and the sweeping cultural changes that resulted through the annihiliation of space. It was as if the world had shrunk, or better yet, the old world had died.Loved the book--Great Narrative, First-Rate Research, Excellent Writer.

This book connects E. Muybridge to history from the beginnings of photography to present day cinema. In the process it provides a concise overview of American history and the American experience. I found this to be easy to read as it is well written and full of facts that I either had forgotten or never knew. For anyone interested in the history of photography this is a 'must read'.

This is the bible for gemologists and is used as a text bok in many classes. I do not recommend this unless you are really serious about getting a certificate. This is not for your average "rock hound", it is very complex and much of the book has to do with equipment you probably do not have. As a gemologist in trainig, I find it very helpful in my studies. It goes more in depth than my class does.

Well written, easy to understand scientific principles. Well illustrated but some of the pictures are dated, could modern pictures. Overall, a great reference for those serious about gemology.

Good book to have in the gemological library.

This book compliments "Gem Identification Made Easy" by Antoinette Matlins. Both are very excellent books. I use each when I have a difficult stone identification, or I am looking for more information that one book may not have that the other does.

This book describes gemmology in very good length with such not-lecture-boring depth.!It "rocks"!I love the end part where all the glossary has additional info.

Great reference book for the gemology student, gemology enthusisst, or gemologist.Condition of the bool has an issue. The binding on a "new" book came apart!!But, the book is a must for my reference library.

Book recommended by those in the industry and could not purchase the text book locally or nationally in Australia and so Amazon delivered. Book very readable with excellent images.

About the Author

Mark L. Gress, CCIE 25539, is an escalation engineer at the Cisco Systems Technical Assistance Center (TAC) in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina, where he has worked since 2005. He has been troubleshooting complex wireless networks since the birth of the Cisco Wireless LAN Controller (WLC) as a TAC engineer, a technical lead for the Enterprise Wireless team, and now as an escalation engineer supporting the complete Cisco line of wireless products. Mark has diagnosed problems in some of the largest Cisco wireless deployments and has provided training for TAC teams around the world. He has also contributed to numerous design guides, application notes, and white papers. As one of the highest contributors of identifying and assisting in defect resolution, his work has led to increases in overall product quality and stability. Mark graduated summa cum laude with a bachelors of science in both computer information systems and business management from North Carolina Wesleyan College. For more than ten years, Mark has been professionally involved in the networking industry. Lee Johnson is currently a wireless specialist on the RTP Wireless TAC team at Cisco. He has been troubleshooting wireless networks, including both autonomous and controllerbased infrastructures, since 2006. Lee troubleshoots complex wireless issues in Cisco customer networks around the world. He has been dispatched to customer sites to address critical accounts and represented Cisco at Networkers. He also provides training and documentation for fellow Cisco engineers in both wireless and nonwireless TAC groups. Lee works closely with the wireless development group at Cisco to improve product quality and the customer experience with the WLC. I have received a 2009/2010 edition when I ordered this product which is supposed to be from 2016. Complete waste of money for a technology book that is so old.

Yes this is a good book and i agree with what people say, but its getting a bit dated, technology is moving fast and with introduction of 5508 and NSC, the book needs to be refreshed, maybe hold off until updated.

Very Helpfull

The first chapter is the most valuable. It offers broad tips for a top down debugging approach to a wireless network problem. Also, it is largely independent of specific hardware elements. You can apply the guidelines even if you have non-Cisco items in the network. Of its advice, two very good tips stand out. The first is simply to have an extensive and complete network diagram. Do this when everything is [presumably] working. Don't wait till things go wrong before amassing such a diagram.The second tip is to imagine you are offsite and are talking on the phone to an onsite sysadmin. And no visuals on your phone. It's strictly audio. This gedanken forces you to focus on what might be the key features of the problem.The rest of the book then delves into specific abilities of Cisco boxes. Often there might be diagnostic text output that you can get. Cisco has been careful about enabling its machines to provide copious diagnostic dumps. The mass of detail is needed because of the many possible failure symptoms. But this also means that part of the skill you should cultivate is an intuition about what to look for in a potential surfeit of a data dump.One impression from the book is that wireless problems can be harder than those in an all-wired network. For the latter, at least in principle, you can trace the wires and test each link. But wireless transceivers can overlap in broadcast range. While evesdropping does not require physical access to your equipment by an adversary.

Over the past year I have been studying/working towards my CCIE Wireless so I have read a lot of the different books out there and this is by far the best book out there. That being said of course there are not that many options to begin with, other than plenty of white papers and highly technical Cisco docs. This book is a very easy and quick read for anyone having worked with the Cisco Unified Wireless equipment. I've found myself on a few instances opening up the book to refresh myself on certain configuration examples when running into issues.I passed my CCIE Written before this book was published but have used it as a study guide for the CCNP-Wireless which I have one exam left. Without breaking the NDA rules I can say this is a great study material for all the certification series. While the CCNA Wireless book is a great intro I find this book more relevant and in depth to the test blueprints and will help you pass the exams.Now if we could just get a CCIE-Wireless Lab Guide to study off of I'd be all set!

Stop motion animation, by it's very nature is a multi skill endeavor. You need to know about timing, how bodies move, the effects of gravity, how to shoot video, how to take pictures, how to tell a story, and how to make movie sets and miniature figures! Wow, that seems like a lot and I hope I didn't scare you off.My point is that stop motion entails a lot of different kinds of things --- And this book touches on all of these things. And it does it very nicely. You get a little bit of the history of stop motion and learn about some of the seminal works in the genre. And you get good information about how to make things move in a way that looks natural. And you get some good information about lighting, building sets and building figures.This is simply an excellent introduction to actually doing stop motion animation. I used this book to make a short animation.You can't go wrong and if you don't know much about how to do animation but want to learn this is a great place to start.Highly recommended. It covers a lot of technical stuff in an easy to understand and not so technical way which is just terrific. Whether you are a amateur or aspiring professional you will benefit from this book.

This book is decent but I made the mistake of buying this SAME book by Susannah Shaw but with a different cover so beware when purchasing.

This book is the basic bible about stop motion for any amateur wanting to learn the process regarding this art.It covers many aspects in a simple way, you can follow it and understand! which is the most important part. Tools and equipment, video, how to record your experiments ... to my fav part, the scenic design.Awesome, I love it and reccomend it!!!!

Very informative. My daughter even took it to college with her and has made a few Stop Motions Animations with some of her friends. Namely her dad and me. Lots of good know-how.

This is very thorough and professional. My own hobby efforts got an order of magnitude better from ideas in this book.

The Author is able to give the reader an accessible overview of the of the most common diseases affecting mankind, and the of the pharmacological approaches used to combat these illnesses in a manner that deftly maneuvers in level from the molecular to the practical. The only reason that I didn't give this book 5 stars is because that I reserve such a rating in this genre for a masterpiece such as "Creating Mind:How the Brain Works"
