The Warhol Economy: How Fashion, Art, and Music Drive New York City

From Publishers Weekly

In detailing the inner workings of New York's creative industries-ostensibly to demonstrate what policymakers ignore when their appreciation for art begins and ends at the museum-urban planning Ph.D. Currid gives readers an eagle-eyed look at the networking mechanics of the art-as-business crowd. Colorful description abounds, as do colorful characters, such as "petite, personable" Claw, who "has clothing lines with Calvin Klein and Ecko, and is the fashion editor for the indie magazine, Swindle," as well as "one of the most celebrated female graffiti artists of all time." Using Claw's success to illustrate "three important characteristics of the cultural economy"-"unique and symbiotic" inter-industry relationships, rapid commodification of cultural goods and multiple streams of self-generating buzz-Currid is at her lucid best. Unfortunately, the policymaking conclusions she draws are weak; Currid doesn't get very far beyond admonitions to stop "shutting down nightclubs" where the art community connects and instead to support, publicly, "ways in which this artistic and cultural environment is reinforced." Funding for cultural organizations such as GenArt are discussed, as are tax initiatives and artist living subsidies, but Currid doesn't take into account the examples of other cities, like Providence, RI, that have already taken such steps; thus, Currid's blanket statements about the state of urban affairs, and her vague recommendations to improve it, aren't nearly as convincing as her vivid cultural reportage. 25 halftones, 22 line illus. Review

"[Currid] describes the organic, informal, social networking side of the creative arts in a mixed tone of Rolling Stone new journalism and objective reporting that serves to advance her central thesis: that as an independent drive of an urban economy, the arts and its related industries should stop being viewed as the beautiful step-child of city environments."---Susan Gardner, Daily Kos"Any discussion about New York City's economic well-being tends to start and end with one phrase: Wall Street. As the Street goes, we assume, so goes the city, which is why politicians will do almost anything to keep the brokerages and investment banks happy.... [In] The Warhol Economy the social scientist Elizabeth Currid argues that this fixation is misdirected, and that it has led us to neglect the city's most vital and distinctive economic sector: the culture industry, which, in Currid's definition, includes everything from fashion, art, and music to night clubs. In other words, it's SoHo and Chelsea, not Wall Street, that the politicians should really be thinking about. Of course, everyone knows that art and culture help make New York a great place to live. But Currid goes much further, showing that the culture industry creates tremendous economic value in its own right."---James Surowiecki, The New Yorker"Elizabeth Currid's argument in this intelligent and innovative book is that New York, and certain other great cities in particular periods, function as the Factory on a greater scale, and that social policy out to reflect that fact."---Roz Kaveney, Times Literary Supplement"In detailing the inner workings of New York's creative industries...urban planning Ph.D. Currid gives readers an eagle-eyed look at the networking mechanics of the art-as-business crowd. Colorful description abounds, as do colorful characters." (Publishers Weekly)"Not every Ph.D student blows her fellowship money at Barneys New York. But for the urban planner Elizabeth Currid, her passion for style led to some interesting statistics, which she examines in The Warhol Economy."---Anya Kamenetz, The New York Times"Sweeping, gossipy, flawed and fun, Currid's book stands alone as a work equally obsessed with the 'location quotient' of a given industry and with Marc Jacobs, the designer....It is the job of the social scientist to take a banal observation--for example, that New York is full of artists and musicians who like to go out at night and all seem to know one another--and worry over it to the point that the obvious seems to fairly glow with complexity. Currid pulls this trick off nicely, and she throws in some amusing backstage anecdotes for extra cultural currency."---Carly Berwick, Bloomberg Muse"An exploration of how fashion, art, and music drive New York City, The Warhol Economy argues that the city's cultural resources contribute more to the economy than most policy makers realize or admit. Interviews with well-known bands, designers, artists, club owners, and writers underscore the value of cultural producers; an appendix's worth of hard numbers back them up."---Annie Fischer, Village Voice"Currid points to the glittery fashion industry, fabulous club life and art openings as more than just creative inspiration in the New York Scene. All are big financial players that help fill the Big Apple's own coffers.... The Warhol Economy brings out the voices of New York scenesters, including fashion designers Diane von Furstenberg and Zac Posen, musicians Quincy Jones and the Talking Heads, as well as Hilly Kristal, founder of the famous but now defunct club CBGB."---Tanya Enberg, 24 Hours Toronto"Currid offers social science with a downtown mentality, crunching numbers with one eye on her data set and the other on the dance floor....The Warhol Economy performs the very useful role of demonstrating how that which appears ephemeral and unimportant in the life of a city actually serves as part of what makes it function.... [The] book reforms and advances the debate on cities and the creative economy that continues to loom large in New York and across the country."---Joe Leduc, Big RED & Shiny"New York's creative industries are inextricably linked...[Currid] discusses not just the power of such social networks, but also the fusion of fashion and art."---Elissa Strauss, New York Sun

Wonder why New York City is such a great town? Read this book, and you'll understand. The author explores why corporations choose NYC for their employees. I get it, and so should you.

A good read to get a general overview of the creative class in NYC

She is very knowledgable about her topic. But again, the fact that she completely takes out theater and dance out of artistic equation on New York really hurts the overall comprehension.

Elizabeth Currid’s Warhol Economy thoroughly explains the intricate concept of culture, art and consumption in New York City. Through personal narratives, qualitative data, and historical events, Currid allows readers to get a critical looking into a new economic paradigm in many cities across the nation. She identifies creative capital as the new urban economy, where class is determined by one’s ability to produce commodities and have them widely accepted as valuable. Borrowing the findings of many noted scholars, such as Richard Florida, Currid describes how a new creative class came to dominating New York’s “Downtown Scene” and contributed to a new cultural economy that had not been seen before.Currid’s writing method was simple. She would introduce each chapter with an anecdote, some from her own experiences living in Lower Manhattan, and others from events in history, such as the rise and fall of Jean-Michel Basquiat. In chapter one, for example, she recalls the life of Basquiat, explaining how his creativity in a changing urban economy took him from a artsy vagabond to a rich painter famous painter of his generation. Furthermore, she explains that cultural consumption around the time of Basquiat’s ascension was a new wave of urban economy, where factory and manufacturing in the city was passé. So, Basquiat’s fame, she argues was symptomatic of a changing economy where cultural products like then arts became a lucrative tool in attaining economic success. Currid was also making the argument that the place in which these cultural products were being produced and sold were crucial hubs that would perpetuate the new economic system.Throughout the book, Currid argues that Lower Manhattan: the Village, East Village, Lower East Side, and SoHo, were the centers of the new urban economy. She argues that creative people, such as artists, would flock to these centers in order to seek inspiration, social acceptance, a fun time, and a place to comfortably be “creative”. In the second chapter Currid provides another anecdote about the photographer, Maripol and how this photographer would look for the next “hot” style in fashion, not on the runway but in the Lower Manhattan dance clubs. Again, Currid explicitly identifies cultural capital as a driving force of creativity in the urban center, while referencing historical instances that validates her findings. Currid emphasizes her Maripol narrative by giving readers a brief history lesson in the Lower Manhattan art scene. Explaining that political and socialists sentiments were primarily printed in New York’s downtown in the early 20th century, Currid posits that writings of expression became an important commodity to the Lower Manhattan art culture. By bringing up the history of Lower Manhattan, Currid drives home the concept of place being a contributing factor in the creative consumer centers of the city.Another interest facet of Warhol Economy is in how it describes the city of New York as an exemplar and outlier from other formerly industrial cities in the United States. Currid makes it plain: New York is not like Detroit or Pittsburgh, and it is quite remarkably different because of its ability to rebound from crisis. Currid claims that New York was able to reinvent itself because of its “human capital”, where individuals engaged in professional services and less standardized production. In a nice way, she explains that New York’s capacity to export cultural products, such as media and film, are in essence leaps and bounds ahead of other formerly industrial cities. Currid intelligently sneaks in graphs to prove her point as well, showing that NYC reigned supreme as having had professional services at the highest percent of their workforce by the year 2000. Further, another graph she rolled out was one that basically proved the Big Apple to have 4 times the concentration of art than any other American City. Graphs proved to be a useful tool in presenting empirical data, as well as breaking up Currid’s sometime repetitive message of how superior New York was in the art scene compared to other American cities.Another important aspect of Currid’s work is her vivid description of the “Tastemaker”. Currid describes this creative sect as individuals who serve two large roles: trendsetter and trend consumer. Further, she considers the Tastemaker to be faceless, an unnamed women on the dance floor wearing an outfit off the beaten path, or a person who frequent the nightlife scene, looking for an open gallery, looking for a new experience. These creative Tastemakers are the ones who decide what culture is “cool” and when, they set the trends, and set the styles. Currid ties Tastemakers into her larger argument of creative consumption by explaining their presence as an important tool in networking and economic success in the art world. So without Tastemakers, there would be no Warhol Economy.Lastly the notion and age-old saying, “it’s not what you know, but who you know” is used by Currid in order to explain how artists find success from networks and not necessarily merit. She begins chapter 4 by telling a story of how she came to knowing famed clothing designer Marc Jacobs. She begins the tale by talking about being lost in Downtown, New York. She kindly asked a man where Bleeker Street was, looking to find one of Jacobs clothing boutiques. To her surprise, the man happened to be a good friend of Marc’s, and had the capacity to call up Marc to coordinate an interview between her and him for her book. These connections, Currid asserts, are ones that create and continue careers for artists and creative marketers. Being able to find those who can propel your career and offer advice or valuable contacts is the difference between success and mediocrity. In sum, in Warhol’s economy the idea-driven person wins. In Warhol’s economy the creative thinker, weird dresser, underground art-dealer wins. However, the opportunity to take advantage of the creative market depends on where a person is located and the time they find themselves in. It is a unique marriage of paradigm and opportunity. New York City served as a stage with which creative minds converged and hustled amid a time of huge money flow. Currid cleverly uses each chapter as an easel, painting a narrative of New York culture and social mobility.

Good book but a tad bit tedious. She enlightened me as to how the creative community is a vital economic consideration and not merely a luxurious by-product of economic conditions. The general purpose of the book is to introduce the reader to a different view of the creative community's role in economics, its origins, catalysts and catalysts of decline. She de-emphasizes the importance of public policy in breeding the necessary conditions while doing so.This is also valuable as a NYC travel guide, a lesson in economics, history and urban planning as well as an index of some of the most interesting names in the NYC creative community. That said, unless you were born yesterday or have never spent any time in a city, going to bars, listening to music, reading books and meeting people, some of this information will seem obvious and redundant. People meet people in clubs and bars, we all know that. You're more likely to run into people in a walking city than a driving city, obvious.I appreciate her thoroughness, but I think this book could have made drove home its excellent message in a book probably 2/3rds the length of this. A good book, but get the cliff notes.

If you're at all a fan of New York City, especially when defined as a cultural mecca, then this is a must read for different reasons than those that The Warhol Economy advertises. An extensive, heady gossip column gone delightfully awry, The Warhol Economy is a book completely infatuated with the city's culture and the industries lying behind it. Fellow New Yorkers and fans of the city and its artistic presence will not be disappointed, and even casual readers will get caught up in her name-dropping passion for the creative denizens of the Big Apple. However, if you're a fan of the artist Andy Warhol, you'll quickly see through the thin veil to realize the author is simply using the artist's name to move copies off the shelves a little more quickly. Very little knowledge or new wisdom involving Warhol is imparted. There is intrinsic value in the above truths, however. First of all, the name Warhol is synonymous with both Pop Art and New York, and, he himself would consider the mention high praise, thinking the concept as being "very pop." Secondly, while the author tends to ramble, loosely relating several familiar topics and famous people to the art and fashion scene of New York, through her chosen verbiage she inadvertently paints a very detailed portrait of the Manhattan collective groupthink. These thought processes are of great value in any timeframe, since as she even points out, "all business is done in New York." Thirdly, such a move to associate her work with Warhol was smart for business, which is really the biggest, if not the only lesson being a resident of New York will teach you.

Completely redundant in that she mentioned only a handful of New York City's avante-garde. The book is interesting but limited in its discussion of the subject. Apparently she thinks that Charles and Ray Eames are brothers and that the MMA is now the Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art. I wouldn't waste your time, if I were you.

Review

"A particularly fine one-volume work that not only draws from a wide variety of sources, but also puts them in a comparative context....Modern myths, such as the idea of Earth as Gaia, intermingle resonantly with their ancient counterparts. It's not just Zeus anymore, as this most usefulvolume makes abundantly clear."--Booklist

This is a well written book by an authority on the subject. David Adams Leeming has organized some wonderful information around specific themes....a somewhat novel approach to gathering tales from world mythology together. He is a good story teller and makes the content come to life. The text is full of nuance and subtlety and it all really comes together in the hands of a master mythologist. It's worth giving it a try if you are interested in the subject matter and if you don't like the subject matter you are probably a hollow shell of an individual and you will probably die alone with your cat who will eat your face off and then poop on the book! Turn off your tv and read something! (Sorry, sometimes I get carried away.)

So much information in this book. I took a World Mythologies course, and most of our work came from this book. It covers myths from all over the world, and includes creation, emergence, apocalypse, afterlife, hero myths, and so very much more. Anyone interested in studying mythology simply must have this book!

Educational, interesting read of all the myths from around the world.

For me, this book was hard to follow. Each section has an introduction (if you can call it that) that gives a little bit of information about the theme of the myths. It is followed by various myths or their excerpts. For me, the book was just a little bit boring and hard to follow. I didnt understand how the myths and the theme in each section related. I wish the author would have provided input to show how the myths related to each other or to a theme. I think the only part written by the author is the opening to each section, other than that, its just regurgitated myths losely linked together. If you need this book for school, then get it, but if you want it for entertainment or self-education, I would choose a different book.

Used for school, a great book!

I bought this book for a college class. I thought that I would end up stacking it with all of the rest. As I read the stories to do my homework, I began reading a whole lot more than I was required. The stories are short enough for the occasional reader to enjoy, but transition nicely for someone who wants to read a lot.I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to learn how similar all of our cultures really are. If we could all learn how similar we are, it would be easier for us to overlook our differences and learn to get along...I also recommend this book for any history buffs, like me, who just enjoy reading tales from our ancestors...

I had to read this book for a college class I was taking. I found it to be quite entertaining and interesting. There were many stories in this book that were a total surprise to me. I often had papers to write in this class and the book provided a lot of information. It would not have been a book I would make a special trip to purchase had I not needed it for my class. However, I have placed it in my library of interesting reading and have recommended it to others.

It is actually pretty interesting. And I am not a fan of reading but I pretty much like it.

Recipes are well organized into color coded sections (seafood, soups and salads, cakes and breads, meats, etc.) and contain recipes with varying levels of difficulty. Some recipes are simple and straightforward; others are intricate and involved. The book is packed with colorful illustrations and the print is large, which is convenient for those who need to read recipes from a bit of distance while cooking. Many of the recipes are not exactly Caribbean, such as Mexican Empanadas or Creamy Pesto Shrimp. There is also a lot of fusion borrowing from Asian cuisine, such as the Bak Choy in Oyster Sauce. Those cooks who don't have plentiful access to tropical produce will also appreciate that there are many recipes that call for ingredients readily available in Northern climates. There are, for example, several recipes where pumpkin is the star ingredient, such as Pumpkin Pancakes, Gingery Pumpkin Soup, and Pumpkin Flan.

I wanted to keep a cookbook of my Trinidadian heritage and found Wendy'S books to be quite interesting. I bought this one since I already own the earlier prints. The book is in remarkable condition at a great price and I am ready to cook up a storm, trini style!!

I've tried about a dozen of the recipes in this book and so far they are all very delicious and reliable. The range of recipes is great and truly Caribbean, featuring recipes from Jamaica to Trinidad!Yum!

The copy received was an old library copy in poor condition.I was disappointed and returned it. They said they discribed it assuch, I do not recall reading that description. I would have thoughtmore carefully before orderingI have ordered used copies from yoursite before and have been pleased.

Wendy has done an excellent job with this cookbook. I was born and raised in the Caribbean, so this cookbook is a refreshing take on ingredients and dishes my family has used for years. I've tried numerous recipes and I'm still left wanting more. My favourite is the lamb in mojo sauce. There are a wide range of recipes for meat lovers and vegetarians and gives a great spin on classic Caribbean dishes. I can't recommend this book enough and the steps are well detailed, which is great for a novice cook like myself.

I saw this in the book store today and plan to buy it from Amazon here. It's full of colorful photographs and each page's recipe is large enough to read (lots of white space which is helpful) and the recipes are typical (but with special touches) of what I've been reading for Jamaica. It's a fairly new book so with the $24.95 price in the store, you can save a couple of dollars by buying it here.

Wendy Rahamut's cook book is extremely easy to use and produces very tasteful meals. It is a fantastic alternative to the traditional Caribbean meals.

"I was a Special Agent in the FBI from 1983 to 1987, and in that time CIA hired me twice as a temporary contractor, the phrase they use for spy." The narrator is Marie Mitchell. American Spy is her story, written in 1992 in the first person as a diary for her young twin sons to read when they're older. The action spans the thirty preceding years—from the Cuban Missile Crisis to the "New World Order" following the end of the Cold War.Marie is the younger of two sisters. Helene, now dead, was five years older and Marie's idol. It had been Helene's ambition to join the CIA and later form her own private intelligence agency. And that's what has led Marie to the FBI, and ultimately to agree to two assignments from the Company. Except, as we'll learn later, they might not have come from the CIA at all. From New York to Martinique to Burkina FasoIn American Spy, the action shifts rapidly and often from New York City to Martinique to Burkina Faso in flashbacks and flashforwards. Marie's FBI posting was in the City. Her family had come from Martinique, and her mother has returned there to live. And Marie's work for the CIA involves "getting close" to the dictator of Burkina Faso, Thomas Sankara.Cold War rivalry in Africa lies at the heart of this storyAuthor Lauren Wilkinson has built her tale around real-world events that transpired in Burkina Faso. Her portrait of Sankara and her account of the actions he took as president of his country hew closely to the historical record. Sankara, and the country he tried so hard to reform, were victims of the Cold War between the US and the USSR.Suspenseful, psychologically sound, and ultimately believableWilkinson's command of plotting and character development are both skillful. Obviously, she understands the discriminatory treatment that hidebound agencies like the FBI so commonly doled out in years past to women and people of color. American Spy is suspenseful, psychologically sound, and ultimately believable. It's all too typical of the Cold War rivalry that victimized so many small nations caught in the middle between two superpowers. How another reviewer saw the bookIn reviewing American Spy, NPR book critic Maureen Corrigan wrote in the Washington Post Book Review (February 15, 2019), "Lauren Wilkinson’s new novel, 'American Spy, is extraordinary in a lot of ways — most obviously because it places a female African American intelligence officer, Marie Mitchell, at the center of a Cold War tale of political espionage. But also striking is the novel’s deeper recognition that, to some extent, rudimentary tradecraft is something all of her African American characters have learned as an everyday survival skill. As Marie’s father wryly tells her on the day of her graduation from the FBI training academy at Quantico, 'I’ve been a spy in this country for as long as I can remember.'"

This book was unlike any I’ve ever read. A quick and unpredictable storyline, superb writing and characters I actually cared about. I truly did not want it to end! In fact, I started getting depressed as I approached the end and paused to find other books like it by Black woman authors (to no avail). I absolutely loved her writing (and thinking) and loved getting a completely different take on Africa. I’ll definitely be looking for her next one! Bravo!

American Spy had everything I needed in it to love it. A hook that smacks you in the face as soon as you open the book. An exotic yet relatable backstory. Sister spies. A how-I-met-your-father romantic mystery. And enough plot twists to keep me on my toes. Lauren Wilkinson is a gifted writer bringing a diverse cast of characters into the political thriller arena with an explosive plot that gives a refreshing perspective on history that hasn’t gotten much exposure in this genre. I loved this book and can’t wait for the sequel.

Sorry to dissent from the many positive reviews. This book is promoted as a spy thriller; it is not. Very little of the plot has to do with spying, and I for one found none of it thrilling. What the book is, is a better-than-average piece of heart throbbing chick lit, hung on a heroine who is sort of a spy who longs for the -- oops, spoiler. I can say, and longs, and longs, and longs. It's really chick lit discussion of the heroine as mother whose feelings, if not her day-to-day life, are pretty much glued to her kids. So, my humble advice: if you want a spy thriller, ignore the hype and do not buy this book. If you want to revel in feminine feelings, then go ahead and I hope you enjoy it.

A story with great twists and turns. The plot is rich and the antagonists are quite multidimensional. I have read many spy thrillers with male protagonists whose stock in trade was womanizing apart from being bad-ass villains quick with their gun and able to escape from near death situations. It was refreshing to see a black woman play protagonist in a spy novel in which the FBI and CIA are intricately woven in. I liked how the protagonist showed empathy to the needs of the Burkina nation and it's people. The relationship between Thomas Sankara and Blaise Compaore is nicely peeled like the layers of an onion. The ending of the book was somewhat weak. The death of her sister Helene was never resolved.

Living in Ouaga as I read this I was amased the detail with which Zone de Bois and Zogona was described - and in Ouaga Benoua Lodge is very real and a place to must dine at.I found the book alright, thought that the secondary characters lacked depth, but overall readable.

This book is brilliant! It's smart and suspenseful, the characters are skillfully drawn, and the plot is fascinating. Strongly recommended for anyone who enjoys literary fiction, spy stories, historical novels, mysteries, and/or taut plotlines.

I liked the authenticity and black love and intimacy between Marie and Thomas. I want to see more of Marie and Robbie kick butts. Marie with her Fed creds and Robbie with his tutelage from the correctional system. Will make for an exciting read.

Snappsy the Alligator (Did Not Ask to Be in This Book), by Julie Falatko Tim Miller

From School Library Journal

PreS-Gr 2—Snappsy the alligator finds himself in a book he doesn't want to be in. He leads a quiet, simple life, but the narrator (a chicken who likes to dance and throw parties) purposely misinterprets his every move. This is fun for readers but not for the main character. "This is terrible!" Snappsy says. "I'm just hungry! Why is this rude narrator trying to make it seem like I need a nap?" Falatko's debut book demonstrates the power of storytelling through words and pictures. The simple cartoon art is a hoot. The narrator's surprise appearance at the end helps Snappsy realize that it's good to have people in your life who push you out of your comfort zone every once in a while. VERDICT A fun read-aloud.—Tanya Boudreau, Cold Lake Public Library, AB, Canada

PRAISE FOR SNAPPSY THE ALLIGATOR (DID NOT ASK TO BE IN THIS BOOK): "A charming, irreverent tale for independent-minded tots."—People Magazine"This is the first book for both Falatko and Miller, and it’s an excellent one—Falatko’s writing nimbly zigs and zags around Miller’s bold, goofy cartoons." —Publishers Weekly, STARRED REVIEW!"More than merely meta, Snappsy is clearly a book, if not a protagonist, with bite." —Kirkus Reviews, STARRED REVIEW! "Falatko’s debut picture book is atruly laugh-out-loud, mischievous romp, made gleefully goofier by Miller’s straight-laced, deadpan animalcharacters."—Booklist, STARRED REVIEW! "Filled with exploration-worthy detail… overdocumented youngsters may feel some sympathy for Snappsy, and audiences...will giggle at his battle with the overexcited narrator."—BCCB, STARRED REVIEW!"This clever debut will renew faith in the possibilities of fourth-wall breaking.”—The New York Times "A silly, clever introduction to the idea of the unreliable narrator.”—The Boston Globe "One of the funniest picture books of the year. . . . utterly irresistible." —BookPage"Falatko’s debut book demonstrates the power of storytelling through words and pictures." —School Library Journal"Distinguished by Falatko’s ability to sustain the tension at length; by Miller’s savory palette... and by the unvoiced suggestion that when fiction is working well, a character can take on a life of his or her own." —Horn Book Magazine"This one goes to the top of the meta-heap. This is just such a fun and clever book...Kids will love how it's weird and unpredictable in the funniest ways but still accessible and worth many reads. Kids who are big readers will especially love the interaction with the narrator. The illustrations are fantastic and bright too. Super.

My kids (7 and 9) thought it was hilarious. Though the words are simple, the reader must understand the situation being implied, so it's not for very small children - a bit more sophisticated humor.

I'm a sucker for a clever book, and this one is clever, funny, and has great illustrations.

We are obsessed with Snappsy in our house. OBSESSED. The illustrations alone crack us up. A perfect author/illustrator pairing.

This is a funny book for kids, with a few jokes for us big kids, too. The plot is not terribly complex or deep, but it was a hit with our 5 and 7 year olds. The illustrations are really good and bound to make you smile.Recommended.

This book is so fun! My two-year-old adores it, and personally, I would love to go to one of Snappsy's parties.

Super cute book! I recommend reading it with two readers, one can play the alligator and the other can be the narrator!!!

Sympathy for this bothered reptile...who comes around in the end, like we all do. Applause for Snappsy...and a big toothy grin!

I spent time in Afghanistan and with Afghan people in the US in the 1980's and was so impressed with their food and cooking techniques that it began a life long love of cooking for me. For years, I've simply accomplished some of the recipes that I was fortunate enough to experience from memory. Finally I've found this beautiful book with authentic cooking techniques explained in lovely drawings and descriptive recipes that leave no mystery unsolved. Helen has produced a charming tribute to a beautiful culture that so few these days are open to exploring. I would recommend this book to Afghans born away from their culture and all people interested in amazing food: not spicy, but exotic, rich and healthy. Now I can add some new recipes to my Afghan dinners, but I'll still tell people "I learned this while I was in Afghanistan" just too maintain the mystique!

Marvelous book! Easy-to-use recipes. Wish it included recipes for bolani, but I've found those on-line. On feast days, the local Islamic Center smells amazing. Now I can re-create that in my kitchen!

Sorry folks but I just couldn't find interest in this book. I haven't been enticed to cook even one recipe.

I wish the index of recipes were also indexed in English. I have to scan the entire book looking for what I want!!!! That is not convenient.....

The book club that I belong to tries, for each book, to tie the food we share at our meeting with the book that we're discussing. This month we read The Kite Runner (Khaled Hosseini, Riverhead Books, 2003 - in my opinion, a terrific book) and I discovered, despite my large collection of cookbooks, that I didn't have any good sources of information about Afghan food. I made do with what I could find on the internet, but at the same time checked out Afghan cookery at Amazon. I chose Afghan Food and Cookery: Noshe Djan, and when it arrived was immediately struck not only by the delightful recipes and excellent writing of Helen Saberi, but by the insights she provides into Afghan culture. Her writing dovetailed beautifully with Hosseini's descriptions of the food eaten by his characters in Afghanistan as well as the circumstances in which it was cooked and presented. I found myself sitting and reading the cookbook as if it were a companion to the novel. For anyone who would like to see behind the scenes presented in Kite Runner, I would recommend Saberi's book!

I was quite amazed to find how tasty Aghan food is, and even more shocked to see the great variety of food that they have. The recipies in this book are very straight forward and surprisingly easy to prepare. It seems to me that a great deal of effort was put into preparing the book because it has extensive cultural notes about the recipies and the country itself. The only gripe I have about the book is that the cover tends to bend outwards really easily and stay bent, but that doesn't subtract from the enjoyment of book.

Quaint drawings and loads of cultural information add to the many and varied authentic Afghani recipes in this helpful book. The author devotes space to helping the reader with unfamiliar terms and ingredients by including a chapter called The Afghan Kitchen. It describes different foods, spices and seasonings as well as techniques. She also writes an introduction which gives information on Afghan culture, traditions and customs. The recipes are easy to follow, delicious, authentic, and most have a little fun fact or helpful tip at the top. Pen and ink drawings are peppered throughout, which gives the reader a peek into the lives of these hospitable and interesting people.

This book is one of the finest examples I've seen of comprehensive cuisine coverage. True, the Afghan cuisine isn't that extensive, the list of ingredients used is short and techniques are simple, but until now, it was impossible to find such an accurate and authentic source of information (even on the internet - try it yourself :-) ).As for accuracy, I've tried 4 recipes from the book so far and they were all at least as good as anything I've had in New York City Afghan restaurants. My only complaint is that there are no pictures at all - maybe this makes the book less expensive, but I kind of like a cookbook to have at least some aesthetic value.

Couldn't find this one last year and had to use a poor substitute. Went searching for this one since my friend and I love it and found it on Amazon for both of us Hooray! I should add that unlike some, this calendar has separate pages for Saturday and Sunday, so you get 365 puzzles. They also have a free offer that will give you a Sudoku on your computer each day. All in all, much the best in my opinion.

Good mix of easy to difficult puzzles.

I buy my brother in law a Sudoku calendar each year for Christmas. He finds them challenging because there are different skill levels. He won't quit a puzzle until he gets it finished. He is pretty good at it. It a good challenge for those who love Sudoku.

I've bought this calendar for a gift for a specific person who likes to start her day off with a mental challenge for the last three years. The Page-a-Day Calendar company is amazing and they do a great job providing challenging Sudoku puzzles for those - unlike me - who enjoy them.

Bought the 2014 Page a Day Calendar for our son last year and received a request for another for the 2015 year.First item of the day over a cup of coffee to complete the daily puzzle. Great item. Thank you.

I have the 2014 (and 2013) Sudoku pageaday. What a great quick break in the day!

The best thing about this is that it is truly a page at a time. I can take the weekend out early to play as well as pre-play vacation days. Others are glued together so you don't really have that option.

Haven't gotten to it yet, because I'm still working on 2013 but I love this format. Can work on it on a flat surface anywhere, can choose as many days to do as I please..
