Another teacher's book that would have been much better off as a short article. It takes one good idea - the idea of reflecting on the practices in the classroom as you teach with various levels of data collection - and bulks it out to a book with much fluff and many, many anecdotes. Not sure if this needed to be written so someone could get a dissertation published for tenure, but there is really no other reason to go to such lengths to describe one, albeit very good, idea.

Teachers' manual book to reflect and to improve curriculum teaching in the classroom. Policy-makers' reference to conduct education reform. Parents' supplementary teaching material to improve their communication with children. Students' vision-broadening book to understand how much effort that teachers have been and will contribute to teaching and learning.

I sure hope that I'm going to use this more than I am now. It's very resourceful.

Great little snippets to start the thank you notes.

I was hoping this book would offer lots and lots of thank you and gratitude quips. I like to write a quip in my thank you notes and I thought this book would offer hundreds. However, its more of a Emily Post type book offering how to write Wedding thank you notes, Baby thank you notes, job thank you notes, clergy thank you notes, etc. I won't use any of those suggestions. I was just hoping for simple 4-line thank you suggestions and again offer lots of heartfelt quips/quotes. Also many of the suggestions seem a little "fake" for example: "We can't thank you enough for the spectacular cookware! You know we love to cook....we're sure to be in fierce competition with world-class chefs". (Would someone really say that? If someone wrote that in a thank you note to me, I would probably roll my eyes.) Also, text is so small....hard to read.

Great book for travel ideas for the everyday person who wants to travel independently - not part of a packaged tour. The hotel prices are not always the same, but gives you an idea what to expect in any given area.

absolutely invaluable travel guide. I wished we'd have ordered it 6 months earlier for planning our travel to England. We took the book with us and the maps were super helpful. After reading the information at home, it was very helpful to review it again when we got to our locations. I'll never travel overseas again without a Rick Steves Guide!

This book is slightly different than the Great Britain book in that it focuses primarily on England - not Scotland, Ireland,etc. That was precisely what I needed. It addressed several areas not covered in the Great Britain book as well as some that are covered, but this had more details. I bought the Kindle version because I didn't want the weight of the book in my suitcase and it works fine, but I do miss the ability to quickly flip from one section to another! If you are a seasoned traveler or a new one, Rick Steves books will work for you.

Rick Steves' England was a great resource for planning activities for a week on my own in London with side trips. Since I had the Kindle version, I could easily carry it on my cellphone and refer to while I was out exploring. Got tips and ideas that I otherwise might have missed.

Rick Steves' guide was SO useful on our recent trip to England. We rented a car and from Yorkshire drove to the Cotswolds, on to the city of Bath and then into Cornwall. We used his guide for overnight accommodations, eateries, and interesting sites. We had no problems finding B&Bs or guesthouses with openings. If not for Rick, we would not have found our last guesthouse - a lovely place in St. Ives overlooking the sea. Great resource. Rick is thorough and down-to-earth.

Helpful tips for a first time trip to England, but some of the advice wasn't quite right and some of the restaurant recommendations are odd (chain places?) Still, very helpful in planning a whirlwind tour and cracking a door open on places I hope to explore further someday.

He's Rick Steves. His information is perfect as always. I took his advice and just tore out the pages I needed so I didn't have the weight of the whole book. On my way home I threw out the book to cut down on weight in my luggage. He publishes updates so often there is not much need to keep the old ones.

The book was helpful, although some of the prices listed were were a little inaccurate. While it would increase the book's price, a few colored pictures and/or maps would be helpful. Detailed maps of downtown London would be more helpful.We have purchased other Rick Steves guide books and have generally pleased with all of them including England.

Nice pictures, maps, etc. But the book is actually useless for rapid identification.The numbered images are impossible to match to the text.They are hifden in the descriptions of each species in no logical order.What was the author thinking making the numbering system useless?How about at least making them large and bold so you can figure out which species goes to which image?

I firstly borrowed this book from the lodge I stayed when I went birdwatching in Kaeng Krachan NP, Thailand. It is quite helpful and it works as a communicator between the bird guide who doesnt speak English and me. I am new on birdwatching and the detail illustrations help me identify the birds I saw. When I came back home I just went on line and ordered one book for my future reference.

BIRDS OF THAILAND is the reason the prestige university press and its zero-tolerance approach to schlock products exists. Princeton University Press has done itself proud with this condensed and focused version of author Robson's BIRDS OF SOUTHEAST ASIA.If you're interested in the birds that inhabit a medium-sized country like Thailand, you don't have many choices in field guides and you may not have many friends. At least, friends who share your precise and tiny interest. For that reason, this review should be read as a referendum upon the PRINCETON FIELD GUIDES as much as on this individual volume.A field guide's physical quality matters more than with other books since you're meant to carry the thing around. The PFG is quality construction through and through and just compact enough to make for convenient traveling.The choice of a small font size in Garamond BookCondensed is a wise one, providing exceptional clarity and saving space for the beautiful and competent illustrations (drawn, not photographed).Because the majority of birders are English speakers by first or second language, bird guides that cover species native to non-English speaking countries often read as though the people who live there (with the birds!) don't exist. This may be a pecadillo rather than a felony, since - after all - such a book is about *birds*, not people. Yet Robson's guide adds the nice touch of Thai indices and page headings, no doubt appreciated by the local colleagues who are necessary participants in a project of this high quality.The Princeton Field Guides include volumes on mammals as well as birds, with a penchant for out-of-the-way locations. If your interest takes you there, any one of these Guides is a worthy investment you'll not regret.

Bought this book before a trip to Thailand. Used it extensively while there. Gave my first copy to a young nephew to help him with his English and spur an interest in natural history. Had to have this in my library so bought a second copy as soon as I got back to the states. Great illustrations, made it easy to recognize many of the birds I was seeing for the first time.

I like this version as it is a paperback and so light to pack on my travels. There is enough information for the beginner as well as that little bit ectra for those who do this birdwatching seriously. I am orginally from Africa and so Asian birds are mostly unknown to me. This is exactly as I hoped it would be: compact, informative and easy to transport. One small complaint would be the sizeof the maps. a tad bigger would have been better, but that is personal.

Supposedly this is the best field guide to Thailand birds, and maybe it is; I've never used another one. Having used the National Geo for North American birds for so long, I guess I'm spoiled. By comparison this book has many deficiencies. Range maps are so small they aren't as useful as you'd like; it's particularly annnoying that, when a bird is very localized, there's no regional view to help you out, only a tiny map of a big country. Behavioral descriptions, which can be so helpful with unfamiliar genuses of birds, are nearly nonexistent. Numbering of individual drawings is very hard to correlate with text, although there are a good number of alternate plumage drawings. Worst of all, some of the drawings just don't capture subtleties of field marks well enough.Overall, most of the problems can be attributed to attempts to save space, and with so many species to cover that's understandable. Authors should have just broken down and made a thicker book. Most birders are hardy; we can handle a few extra ounces.

With useful range maps and concise species accounts opposite the nicely uncrowded plates,featuring larger-sized illustrations, this is a near-perfect format for a field guide.This book is already 10 years old, so my hope is that they produce a revised and updated version soon.

About the Author

Touko Laaksonen, the boy who would become Tom of Finland (1920-1991), began drawing cartoons at age five. His favorite subjects were the rough manly men of his native Finland, as Touko knew from an early age that men interested him more than women. His talents were further honed by art study in Helsinki. He found success in the Finnish advertising industry but secretly continued creating his increasingly erotic drawings of hyper-masculine men. In 1957 he submitted some drawings to the American magazine Physique Pictorial and the “Tom of Finland” legend was born. By the late 60s Tom’s “dirty drawings” became the standard for gay art, and Tom’s Men a template for a new gay masculinity. Tom’s art continues to play an important role in promoting self-confidence, positive self-image and openness in the gay community.

Pages and pages of Touko Valio Laaksonen, aka Tom of Finland, and his beautiful drawings.The more of his pieces you view and experience, the more you see how brilliant he was with shading. Creating shape and movement, intent and expression, putting everything in motion, even in the still moments of aftermath. These are me feelings, anyway, whenever I'm looking at these images.In your face while whimsical and intimate, I could look these pieces for days on end, feeling the electricity of life jumping off the page.The book itself is well-bound, with quality thick paper that richly takes the printing of these images. I could feel the texture of the reprints. Gorgeous.I love having this in my collection. What I love even more are the fantabulous conversations I have with friends whenever Tom of Finland pops up. ;)

I bought this as a surprise gift for my husband, who had never heard of Tom of Finland! I wasn't sure if he'd like it or not, as it didn't seem to be his thing. But he loved it. The pictures are beautiful, the book is very high quality. Great addition to our library.

Tom of Finland is simply the best, and this collection shows off much of his amazing work. I have several volumes of Tom of Finland art and comics, and this book is a great addition. It's small, so it's easy to hold, the book is well made, and the printing is topnotch.
