I really like this blogger and was sure I'd like her book so I pre-ordered it. I still thank her immensely for her contributions, but I didn't like this book as much as I thought I would. Page after page reminded me to be present to my children, without any concrete suggestions on making time for other things that also make my life meaningful (other friends, outside hobbies, a fulfilling career). Also, a lot of the message seemed aimed at parents of school age children (example-do your phone/computer work when your kids are in school and turn these things off when your kids are home). Perhaps I was in a cantankerous mood when I read it, after a 14 hour shift of solo childcare for a four and one year old, but the message of "treasure every moment" didn't sit well with me. While it is a helpful reminder that these years go quickly, I was hoping for a little more balanced message about being a devoted mom AND a person with important outside interests/work, as I know the author is. Wish she's shared a little more of that. Just how did you write a book, get 7-8 hours of sleep a night, and not ignore your kids in the meantime!?!
I wanted to love this book and made it probably of a quarter of the way and couldn't even finish it. It felt very preachy and just talked about how great her and her family are at being "hands free" instead of guiding you how to do it yourself. Meh.
You know, I wish I could give this a higher rating. I’d deleted social media shortly before reading this book because, on my own, I was on the path to creating a life similar to what she champions.I enjoy and agree with most of what she’s saying... however I don’t agree with how she said a lot of it. Though I’m sure it’s far from her intentions, I often felt she came off as preachy and judgmental. At times, a little “holier-than-thou.†Making comments about strangers who she had no contact with who were engaged on their phones, using situations where another mom did the perceived “wrong thing†as some of her examples. Good intentions, but her style rubbed me the wrong way.
Hands Free Mama was the perfect wake up call for this mama of a 5-year old and 2-year old. Much like Rachel, I had too much going on in my life, and was getting a lot accomplished, but wasn't experiencing very many meaningful moments with my kids or my husband. This book helped me realize that it's ok if everything doesn't get done, it's ok if everything isn't perfect. When you let go of these things, you find a lot more time in your life, and a lot more space in your heart to love. If you're someone who feels every moment of the day should be productive, or that you should be checking something off your list, or you find it hard to just relax, then this is for you! Thanks, Rachel, for this message!
I really wanted to like this book. The cover is appealing, and the mission statement inside is nice, but after you get past that it is very repetitive and crappy. I get the gist of it, put down electronics and distractions, but real people living in the real world don’t always have the time to be up each other butts and in their children’s faces every time they open their mouths. I am not going to feel bad if I lay my child down for bed and don’t sit and talk about the things bouncing around in their heads every night. They know they are loved and important and if they need to talk I am always there. This was nothing more than her taking you along for her guilt trip and trying to suck you in making you feel crappy as she did for the relationship she had with her kids. As if being a parent in this world isn’t hard enough we don’t need someone writing a very long boring book telling us how we will ruin our children’s hearts and lives by not going and dancing in the rain... puhleaseee.
Love this book. This book make you open up your eyes so much. It makes you just stopAnd re-evaluate yourself And slow down. A book I repeatedly go back to, just as a refresher or even a reminder to open your eyes, sit back, and just enjoy life. Enjoy what God has blessed you with, and most importantly kids grow up and life goes by faster than we know it, remember to stop and watch them instead of watching through our electronics.

Halfway through it, its a great reminder and everyone should follow her plan. Well written. I don't appreciate all the God references in it, it narrows her intended audience. I'm not doing it for God, and I'm not thanking God every two seconds like she does. So I am a bit put off by that. Otherwise a good read so far.
