The Silk Roads: A New History of the World, by Peter Frankopan

Review

“This provocative history challenges the view of the West as heir to a pure Greco-Roman culture. For Frankopan, the brutish West owes its more enlightened traditions to the lands east of Italy and west of China, which were, for centuries, 'the centre of the world'… Frankopan marshals diverse examples to demonstrate the interconnectedness of cultures, showing in vivid detail the economic and social impact of the silk and the slave trades, the Black Death, and the Buddhist influence on Christianity.” —The New Yorker   “In his new book, The Silk Roads, Frankopan has created something that forces us to sit up and reconsider the world and the way we've always thought about it… The book takes us by surprise right from the start.” —Nishant Dahiya, NPR “This is deeply researched popular history at its most invigorating, primed to dislodge routine preconceptions and to pour in other light. The freshness of… Frankopan’s sources is stimulating, and their sheer range can provoke surprising connections. He likes to administer passing electric shocks… The sheer abundance of Frankopan’s information can become an omnivorous pleasure, and its details add color and particularity to his text… He plunders data magnificently... A brave, subtly personal project of inspiring ambition and epic scope.” —Colin Thubron, New York Review of Books “Peter Frankopan… [is a] brilliant and fearlessly wide-ranging young Oxford historian… Frankopan marches briskly through the centuries, disguising his erudition with an enviable lightness of touch, enlivening his narrative with a beautifully constructed web of anecdotes and insights, backed up by an impressively wide-ranging scholarly apparatus of footnotes drawing on works in multiple languages... This is history on a grand scale, with a sweep and ambition that is rare… A remarkable book on many levels, a proper historical epic of dazzling range and achievement.”—William Dalrymple, The Guardian “One of Mr. Frankopan’s gifts as a storyteller is his ability to draw unusual connections across his vast canvas… [he] packs his tale with fascinating trivia… Frankopan has written a rare book that makes you question your assumptions about the world.” —Sadanand Dhume, The Wall Street Journal“Frankopan casts his net widely in this work of dizzying breadth and ambition… Those opening to any page will find fascinating insights that illuminate elusive connections across time and place…  Frankopan approaches his craft with an acerbic wit, and his epochal perspective throws the foibles of the modern age into sharp relief” —Publishers Weekly (starred review)  “A glorious read. The author, the prodigious director of Oxford University’s Centre for Byzantine Research, weaves into his narrative astonishing facts…Frankopan is an exhilarating companion for the journey along the routes which conveyed silk, slaves, ideas, religion, and disease, and around which today may hang the destiny of the world.” —Henry Porter, Vanity Fair.“In his new book, The Silk Roads, Frankopan has created something that forces us to sit up and reconsider the world and the way we've always thought about it… The book takes us by surprise right from the start.” —Nishant Dahiya, NPR “Superb… Peter Frankopan is an exceptional storyteller… The lands of the Silk Roads are of renewed importance, and Frankopan’s book will be indispensable to anyone who wants to make sense of this union of past and present.”—Philip Seib, The Dallas Morning News“Dazzlingly good ... [Frankopan blends] deep scholarly skill with a real literary talent” —Dan Jones, Evening Standard (U.K.) “A sweeping, fascinating chronicle of world history focused on trade—in silk, spices, furs, gold, silver, slaves, and religion—in a vast region from the Mediterranean's eastern shores to the Himalayas… Frankopan weaves together his many narrative strands with verve and impressive scholarship. A vastly rich historical tapestry that puts ongoing struggles in a new perspective.”—Kirkus (starred review) "The author's gift for vividness is reminiscent of Jan Morris, while his command of revealing facts or fancies is not far short of Gibbon's." —Felipe Fernández Armesto, Literary Review (U.K.) “A very well-written and wide-ranging study, founded on reading of staggering breadth and depth... Strikingly up to date. The author has used the most recent scholarship to impressive effect... And he is evidently constantly rethinking in the light of new scholarship... The book is full of fascinating insights... No one could read it without learning a great deal, or without having their conception of the course of history radically challenged.” —The Times Literary Supplement (U.K.)“Beautifully constructed, a terrific and exhilarating read and a new perspective on world history.” —Averil Cameron, History Today“This is, to put it mildly, an ambitious book… By spinning all these stories into a single thread, Peter Frankopan attempts something bold: A history of the world that shunts the centre of gravity eastward… Mr. Frankopan writes with clarity and memorable detail… Where other histories put the Mediterranean at the centre of the story, under Mr. Frankopan it is important as the western end of a transcontinental trade with Asia in silks, spices, slaves—and ideas.”—The Economist “The Silk Roads, which covers several continents and many centuries, is based on astonishingly wide and deep reading and in all areas draws on the latest research… It is full of vivid and recondite details.”—Robert Irwin, The Independent (U.K) “Why are we driven, physically, intellectually and emotionally, to reach out beyond the horizon toward the unknown; to explore, connect and communicate? That query motivate Peter Frankopan’s splendid study… Throughout he relies on economic analysis…Recognizing that the fringes of the cloth are as interesting as its fabric, Frankopan also spins off on to the threads of social history…Underlying the tightly researched history is a grander human truth. As a species, we are motivated by stories… This invigorating and profound book has enough storytelling to excite the reader and enough fresh scholarship to satisfy the intellect… Charismatic and essential.” —Bettany Hughes, The Daily Telegraph (U.K) “Timely... It deserves a place by the library fireplace.”—Country Life (U.K.)“What does history look like if we shift our focus eastward and give due prominence to those who traversed the Silk Roads? This is the question Frankopan answers in this immensely entertaining work. Many books have been written which claim to be “A New History of the World”. This one fully deserves the title… So ambitious, so detailed and so fascinating… The Silk Roads demonstrates why studying history is so important.”—Gerard DeGroot, The Times (U.K.) “Book of the Week”“It’s time we recognized the importance of the East to our history, insists this magnificent study… The breadth and ambition of this swashbuckling history by Peter Frankopan should come as no surprise… A book that roves as widely as the geography it describes, encompassing worlds as far removed as those of Herodotus and Saddam Hussein, Hammurabi and Hitler… It is a tribute to Frankopan’s scholarship and mastery of sources in multiple languages that he is as sure-footed on the ancient world as he is on the medieval and modern… Deftly constructed… The Silk Roads is a powerful corrective to parochialism.”—Justin Marozzi, The Sunday Times (U.K.)  “An exhilarating tour of 2,000 years of history… There is plenty of bang for your buck as you journey through The Silk Roads. Frankopan upends the usual world-history narrative oriented around ancient Rome and Greece and the irrepressible rise of Europe… In a series of brisk chapters—The Road of Faiths, The Road of Furs and so on—studded with state-of-the-art research that is sourced from at least a dozen languages, the author brings wondrous history to vivid life… In The Silk Roads, Peter Frankopan has provided a bracing wake up call.” —Matthew Price, The National (AE)

Author Peter Frankopan sets out, mostly successfully, to reorient our knowledge of history as taught in Europe and North America — history as viewed through the lens of Western Civilization courses. My quibble is that this is still a view of Central Asia though European eyes, and arguably the author pays slight attention to the history of ancient India and China and overplays the history of Central Asia and Western misconceptions of the Mongols.Frankopan’s main thesis is that the region stretching from the Mediterranean to China, and particularly the region that is now Iraq, Iran, and Afghanistan, remains the crossroads of civilization and the center of global affairs. As such, we need to understand ancient history and historical development over more recent centuries, as well as the way history is perceived by those in the region. The book proceeds chronologically. Chapter headings trace the many “silk roads” that have influenced global history, including the emergence and migration of major forms of religious faith, the rise and fall of empires at a time when Europe was an uncivilized backwater, and the role of trade as a conduit for the spread of ideas and wealth. We learn, for example, that the early expansion of Islam was benign. Often the major religions coexisted peacefully. Mohammed and the Jews needed each other as both repudiated Jesus as the Messiah. In Damascus, churches were untouched even as Islam became the religion of the majority. Only after divisions began to develop in Islam did attitudes harden toward other religions, says the author.Western Europe in the 600s and 700s was barbaric, while Baghdad was at the height of its wealth and academic achievement. Thus, traders and intellectuals along the Mediterranean were oriented toward the East, not Western Europe. Among conventional beliefs that Frankopan seeks to puncture is the notion that the Mongols were chaotic. Instead he says they were good bureaucrats and operated as a meritocracy. Terror was applied selectively but was broadcast broadly as a tool of coercion. The result was to control wealthy territories with a minimum of effort. As Elizabethan England competed with Spain, says the author, there was an opportunistic alliance with the Muslim world against a common enemy. Both the English and the Moors engaged in piracy against the Spanish and Portuguese. The English freed Muslims who had been “galley slaves” and returned them home, and had Muslim support for the 1596 attack on Cadiz. Shakespeare portrays positively the Moor in Othello and Persia was also characterized favorably in English literature of the time.By the late 18th and early 19th Century, however, the power relationship between rising Western European powers and Persia and neighboring countries had been reversed. India became a crown jewel in the British Empire and the British became preoccupied with fear of Russian expansion into Persia. Misunderstandings were rife. “The British cannot say what they mean and the Persians do not mean what they say,” noted one observer. In the aftermath of World War I, the British created Iraq out of Mesopotamia, arbitrarily combining a hodgepodge of nationalities. As oil was discovered in Iraq and Iran, the British moved quickly to exploit these resources and minimize the royalties that were paid to the nations from which oil was extracted. Dissatisfaction with British oil companies resulted in a greater role for American oil companies, but the exploitation of the region changed little until OPEC was formed. The final 40% of the book is devoted to British and American ignorance and arrogance in the 20th and 21st Centuries, resulting in the support of the Shah in Iran, Saddam Hussein in Iraq, and Ayub Khan in Pakistan among others. Frankopan characterizes British, then American strategy as “solving today’s problems without worrying too much about tomorrow’s problems.”This is useful background for anyone trying to understand the resentment felt in Iraq and Iran toward the West today. As Frankopan looks forward, there is little analysis of the potential role of China in the balance of power that could shape the region’s future or of India whose population and economy are among the world’s largest and fastest-growing.Instead, with an emphasis on what was once known as Mesopotamia, the author asserts that, “the Silk Roads are rising up once more.” Events that appear chaotic instead are the “birthing pains of a region that once dominated the intellectual, cultural and economic landscape of the world…We are seeing the signs of the world’s centre of gravity shifting — back to where it lay for millennia.” This seems an optimistic analysis. In sum, the value for many readers will be found in the first half of the book, as a balance to the history taught in the West. The resentments held in the region toward American and British influence are the result not just of recent decades but of exploitation taking place in the past 100 years. Oddly, though, the author’s contemporary assessment of the region seems viewed through the same Western lens that he criticizes as having warped our understanding of the past.

I was very disappointed after reading all the wonderful reviews. Maybe they are reading a different book? I had assumed we would be learning about the history of the silk roads and the many dynasties that rose and fell along the route - the Songdians, the cities of the Tamir Basin for example. I thought this would be an Asian centric book showing the silk roads impact on Han Dynasty China and the steps that had to be taken to keep the route secure. I thought we would learn of the earliest use of the silk road in trade between Sumeria and what is now northern Afganistan based on the early trade in Lapis and how this led to the later creation of Faience. Or perhaps how the silk road brought Buddhism to the west and mixed the artistic sense of the descendants of Alexander's army with the Central Asian Buddhist cave dwellers. I was very wrong in my expectations.Maybe I am missing something but this is still a Western-centric view, centered on Byzantium and medieval Europe. The first steppe dwellers we meet in any depth are the Mongols, who by that time, are a thousand years later than the early steppe dwellers who so profoundly influenced world culture both East and West. This book spends most of it's time in detailing the trade and fortunes of the West instead of focusing on the various kingdoms of the silk road. What is going on here? How could all the reviewers have missed this? This book is not as advertised a new history of the world, but rather a view of the economic impact of trade on the western world. For example, how does Columbus come to bear on the silk road? We read here about his expedition but no analysis relating to the silk road at all. That is one of many examples to show that the author does not seem to have much interest in writing about the silk road, but rather about how luxury good trade impacts the western world. This is my first book review although I have read dozens that I may not like. I am only writing this because it is not that I do not like what is written, but rather it is not what the book title implies and I want to give fair warning to others who may be like me in their interests.

“The Silk Roads” is a wonderful invigorating work of history. It is directed to the general reader rather than the specialist. I found it be absolutely riveting. The essence of the book is that, in the West, our history is viewed through a very narrow lense. Schools teach its students of the Roman Empire, the subsequent Dark Ages, the Norman conquest in 1066, Henry VIII and the Tudors, the American War of Independence, the Industrial Revolution and the First and Second World Wars. The vast bulk of a map of the world from western Europe to China is passed over very quickly. With “The Silk Roads”, Peter Frankopan has attempted to redress this imbalance. As the author states:“For centuries before the early modern era, the intellectual centres of excellence of the world, the Oxfords ad Cambridges, the Harvards and Yales, were not located in Europe or the west, but in Baghdad, and Balkh, Bukhara and Samarkand”.Moreover, Frankopan gives the reader a perspective on the rise of Mesopotamia, Alexander the Great, the rise of Christianity in the eastern Roman Empire and then the subsequent rise of Islam throughout much of Asia. He then proceeds to discuss the Crusades, the rise of Genghis Khan and his mighty Mongol Empire and then the rise of China more specifically. He concludes by bringing the book up to the present day with the rise of Europe and the USA before suggesting that there is a reorienting of history underway again. In other words:“we are witnessing…the birthing pains of a region that once dominated the intellectual, cultural and economic landscape and which is now re-emerging. We are seeing the signs of the world’s centre of gravity shifting – back to where it lay for millennia”.Whether you agree or not with Peter Frankopan’s conclusions, the book remains a tour-de-force. Thoroughly recommended.

After reading just a few pages, it soon becomes obvious why it won awards. However, reading levels and vocabulary have fallen since 1961 when it was published so that most middle school students today will not understand and appreciate the story very well. It's the perfect book to read in English class at the same time students are studying the Roman Empire in History class. There is much useful vocabulary to prepare students for college, as well as many literary devices to discuss, and character development as well. It's a good choice for high school for Christian schools, home schools and students in secular schools writing about books of their choice. Books like this allow a teacher or parent to coordinate history and literature in a unit study.

Elizabeth George Spear is a phenomenal author and this story is wonderful. We read this book aloud to our four kids ages 12 to 5 And the older two children were completely and enraptured with the characters and story line. If you like this book I encourage you to read other books by this timeless author.

Summary:This is the story of Daniel, a young Jewish runaway who's taken up with a band of Zealots and bandits in hopes of driving the hated Romans out of his homeland. When the death of his grandmother forces him to go back home and care for his unhinged sister, he slowly begins to realize how little his carefully honed hatred has done for him, and how little use it is in achieving his ends. As his animosity brings disaster to his friends and destruction to his home, he turns in desperation to the prophet Jesus of Nazareth. My thoughts:Speare's book is well-written, accessible, and full of vitality. The theme of the book - the powerlessness of hatred - is as beautifully depicted here as anywhere, and is portrayed on an excellent level for younger readers (older ones will find that this book dovetails on a thematic level with C.S. Lewis's novel Till We Have Faces). Although this is certainly a Christian work, Jesus is not the main character, and the Christian themes arise organically from the characters themselves. Less satisfying are the statements and actions of Jesus himself. While Speare doesn't quite portray Jesus as an ordinary man, she apparently goes out of her way to avoid phrases like "Son of God" and it's a little unclear whether his miracles are actually miraculous or just the power of personality and suggestion. While this is disappointing and potentially troublesome to an adult reader, it's very unlikely that a reader at the younger end of the spectrum would even notice the inconsistencies. Those passages could even serve as excellent discussion starters.

One of the better fictionalized New Testament stories I've read. In a genre where sometimes the bar isn't set too high, in this book, the characters were well-drawn and interesting. The 1st century setting felt real. The author achieves a real transformation for the main character, Daniel, and it is well-dramatized and affecting. Apparently, this is what would be deemed YA (young adult) category, but I'm an adult and I enjoyed it.

Upon his grandmother’s death, teenaged Daniel returns to the town where he grew up to take care of his demon-possessed sister and take over the blacksmith shop of a friend, Simon, who has become one of Jesus’s disciples. Hoping Jesus is the one to deliver them from the tyranny of the Romans, Daniel and his friends form a group with the bronze bow (from 2 Samuel) as their symbol. The Bronze Bow by Elizabeth George Speare is a wonderful story of what anger and hate can do to us. The setting of first century Galilee and the peripheral character of Jesus Christ works well. I recommend this book to anyone about middle school age and up.

My daughter's Sunday School teacher gave this book to her class as a Christmas present last year, and I recently read it. It was so good that I purchased it for a friend who also enjoys historical Christian fiction. It's very well written, and I learned a lot about the culture of Jesus' day. I think it will give anyone a greater appreciation of the ministry of Jesus, the struggles that the Jewish community experienced under the control of the Romans, and a visualization of the region of Galilee where Jesus spent most of his life an ministry.

Read this myself in middle school and as an adult I still remember how much this impacted me in my youth. Through the point of view of a young boy during the time of Jesus, it was interesting to see how he was influenced even though his life was totally separate and he was going through hard times on top of finding his place in the world. Lots of great core value stuff in here. Got this for my nephew for Christmas but haven't heard yet how he liked it.

Bronze Bow is an excellent, timeless book. It is well written and helps students or adults understand what was going on in Israel during the time of Jesus. It deals with the resistance to the Roman intervention. The best aspect of the book is that Jesus is an important supporting character, but whenever he is directly involved in the plot, he doesn't do or say anything that is not specifically described in the Bible. This book does not proselytize but has a strong theme of forgiveness and sacrifice. It is appropriate for both Christians and non-Christians who are interested in the culture at the time.

This is the same message and teaching as the original, adult book of, "The Secret," ...only spoken in a mildly more youthful manner. I found out that it was great for ME, a middle-aged man, to have a slightly different approach or teaching on this message on the Law of Attraction to fill out the message for me, presented in the first book! I took advantage of listening to it, for myself, before I sent it on to it's intended recipient, my 13 year old nephew! Everything feels good and natural about these teachings!

I think it could and would help any troubled teen if you just get them to listen to it. In my case that didn't work. Got it for my friends daughter who is 14 and out-of-controll. But I don't believe she ever listen to the CDs. It is exactly like the Secret CDs for grown-ups except it uses the right language and examples for a teenagers life. Wish I would have had that advise myself when I was that young. You can bring the water to the horse but you can not force it to take a bath... Good Luck!

I sent this to my nephew and bet him he wouldn't read it and do what it said. He took the bet and as turned his life around. It's still a work in progress but his life is getting better and better each day.

I know the original book well an this one is the best for teens. I loved it myself before I gave it to my grand children.

This is uplifting to young teens experiencing a new chapter in life. I bought it for my step daughter who is entering high school in August and dealing with some life changing issues.

Im a Guidance Counselor. I love the message behind The Secret. I bought this book for a couple of my selected Middle School Students to read. It seems like an easy way for a younger student to get the message about The Secret since the original book, The Secret, is written more for adults. It is a quick read for my better students.

This is a great version of the secret for teens! Bought one for my daughter and gave another away to a friends kid!

Great positive book for my 13 year old boy. When reading he would come down each night and practice philosophies and approaches he learned in the book. Highly recommend for girl or boy 10-13.

This is an advanced nursing text book and being that it is very specific so this is not a review of its content. So much of that depends on a course instructor and the individual student's interest in the subject matter. My issue is with the fact that so many Kindle editions of text books do not have page numbers, this one included. Anyone working at any academic level is aware of the importance of page numbers in first, following along with course content and second, producing authentic citations. I am afraid that I am going to have to abort my great experiment into digital text books this semester and exchange this and several other texts for their paper counterparts.

Nursing textbooks are typically dry and wordy. This one is different. The authors keep the subject interesting by using practical situations to illustrate EBP concepts. They make the subject easy to understand because they keep it simple. If you're looking for an EBP text that isn't overloaded with dreadful academia overspeak, try this one.

I absolutely despise this textbook. It is very repetitive and I believe it makes the subject overly complicated. The authors explain concepts in hundreds of words that could easily be explained in just a few. In addition, it reads as if much of the language is made up gibberish, as if the authors are inventing concepts and terminology to somehow elevate the material.

This was a book offered for my graduate level research class. It had been years since I had research in the BSN program. Unfortunately, I needed a review of terms that this book didn't offer. When I read something I didn't understand, I had to call my duaghter who had just finished a research class at the BSN level ad have her explain the parts of research I didn't understand. My daughter stated the book she had was by far more informative than the book I had. I wouldn't recommend this book at all.

I used this book for my schooling and it has been very helpful. I used it for one class and am using it again now to help with my practice inquiry project for my Doctor of Nursing program. Good book.

A+++ love this product! Highly recommend!

#364,460 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

There are certain books that have contributed so significantly to my life that I consider them "revolutionary" (at least to me). This is one of those books. If you're a lover of learning or personal growth I just can't imagine not devouring the goldmine of information in this book. Of course, opinions vary, as some reviews of this book indicate. Some say its "too technical" with "unpractical filler" while some others say that its "not overly informative." To each their own I suppose but I'm going to tell you why I think this book is one of the best ever written on the subject and why mnemonics are incredibly powerful tools for assimilating, retaining, and recalling knowledge in any subject area...Although virtually everybody has used some type of mnemonics in rudimentary form since kindergarten you'd think more people would stop and ask themselves why they're so prevalent in our early years, and also why we don't use them more, and why we stopped (mostly) as we grew older. To cut to the chase, here's the bottom line in a nutshell: Mnemonics can dramatically increase the ease, speed, and amount of knowledge you're able to acquire and retain. In short, you'll get more faster and retain more longer, and far easier too. In other words, with practice your ability to learn nearly anything will exponentially improve. So what exactly are mnemonics? I'll quote: "The word 'mnemonic'...is derived from Mnemosyne, the name of the ancient Greek goddess of memory...Mnemonics refers in general to methods for improving memory; a mnemonic technique is any technique that aids the memory."Although its very important to note that mnemonics aren't some magical wand or sideshow trickery, rather, they are applied psychology. "Mnemonic systems do not replace the basic principles of learning but use them. They are merely specialized elaborations of normal memory activities...they are based on well established principles of learning." Memory is not a thing; it's a process. No matter how it is done, remembering is work, and memory aids are not necessarily supposed to make it easy, just more effective. Learning to use mnemonics is a skill that requires practice just like acquiring any other skill." So if you're not willing extend the effort to actually become proficient mnemonics you'll be wasting your time for the most part.As a personal example, from the moment I first read this book I was fascinated but skeptical. Yeah sure ok so I could remember my grocery lists a lot easier but I wanted some real proof, so after considering some memory "goals" I settled on one that I considered a pretty impressive memory feat (at least for those of us not aspiring to win a memory sport competition): to memorize the entire periodic table of elements. And not just the elements, but also all the information associated with them in the table such as period/group, atomic wt, atomic number, symbol, electron configuration, state (solid, liquid, gas, unknown), reactivity characteristics (alkali metals, halogens, etc.). I chose the periodic table because it contains a lot of fairly abstract information that most of us happily dismiss after we're forced to endure referring to it in high school or college. Mind you, I hadn't taken a chemistry course since college (about fifteen years prior to my reading the book) and am not a professional chemist. To my own amazement I was able to do it, and to this day I can still recall 95% of it. It may take me 5-10 seconds to answer a given question but I can still do it. As a "B" chemistry student twenty years ago as well as a non-chemist, I feel this stands as a pretty convincing testament to mnemonic techniques. Granted, I understand that memorizing the periodic table of elements may not be your cup of tea (and frankly, I chose it precisely because it was dense and so far outside my day-to-day needs) but I did it only to prove to myself this stuff actually works, and I've since applied these techniques every single day in virtually all manner of things that are very much within my day-to-day needs, to great effect. As Higbee says, "...whether or not people want to do such feats, the important point is that they can do them; and that means they can also do other things with their memories that they DO want to do..."But beyond anecdotes, a lot of evidence for the effectiveness of mnemonics exists. I think this may be what some reviews have missed about why Higbee goes into such background detail on why mnemonics work and what evidence supports it. I'll spare you all the blow by blow of that evidence and refer you to the book, but the point is yes there are evidence-based reasons how and why mnemonics work, as well as evidence proving they do indeed work. Some of us really need/appreciate the logic underpinning the techniques as well as the proof that we're not wasting our time. Higbee very clearly and methodically builds that case before jumping into the "doing" of the techniques themselves.Briefly, mnemonics work so well because they leverage the inherent ways our brains actually function to our advantage. They're like aikido for the brain. They associate something to be learned with something already known. The reason(s) mnemonics work involve the hard wiring of how our minds work, but for a quick analogy, say you have a flat tire on a car. Would you rather try to lift a car with your back, or use a hydraulic jack instead? Or, would you rather hammer a nail with your shoe or a hammer? Well, mnemonics are the jack and hammer. Is it "cheating" to use the jack? Is it circus-style trickery to use the hammer? Nope...it's simply using a tool to more effectively perform a given task.Mnemonics aren't some "trick"; they are simply methods, or tools, for acquiring/remembering information that would prove either inefficient or impossible otherwise. They do this by first acting as a "conceptual glue" that holds disparate pieces of information (especially new information) together. They function on this level as a means of corralling the information and holding it in queue. Secondly, they help simplify the information, thereby off-loading the mental burden which then frees the mind up to focus on connecting those pieces of information together to actually understand and apply them. Finally, mnemonics then provide structure and organization to the information (especially on material that is otherwise not very meaningful or organized), and because higher order tasks such as problem solving, analysis, and critical thinking depend on the cohesiveness and order of the underlying knowledge base, mnemonics increase the effectiveness of those tasks. So, both in terms of efficiency and effectiveness, mnemonics improve learning and our ability to manipulate and apply knowledge. The primary criticism of mnemonics by some in academia goes something like this: "'Mere memorization' is a low-level mental skill (as opposed to higher order skills such as critical thinking, reasoning, analysis, etc.); therefore, methods of improving acquisition and recall of information (i.e. memory, memorization, or mnemonics) are low-level mental skills with a low level of importance." Not only is this attitude usually presented with a sort of arrogant and condescending demeanor, it flies in the face of history, experience, and evidence. "Critics rarely make it explicit that the alternatives to mnemonics are either dumb blind repetition or simply outright failure, and no one seems to want to champion these alternatives." Further, and most disturbingly, this flippant dismissal of mnemonic techniques by some belies a fundamental misunderstanding of how human beings learn. Learning occurs in steps or stages...in other words, it's a process...with acquisition necessarily coming first, then things like problem solving and reasoning later. An analogy between mnemonics and Maslow's hierarchy of needs serves as a good illustration. Without food, water, and sex (sex, as in, for the perpetuation of genes to successive generations) none of the other emotional, social, intellectual, spiritual needs can be met. In other words, survival first, then we worry about self-actualization. After all, its hard to strive for your fulfillment as a self-actualized individual if you never existed (or didn't survive) in the first place, right? Similarly, of course high order reasoning and analysis are our goals, but "more sophisticated mental operations...are impossible without rapid and accurate recall of bodies of specific information." In other words, acquisition and retention of knowledge not only facilitate higher order mental operations, they are prerequisite. Thus, loftier goals are in addition to, not instead or, the acquisition/recall.By the way, for those interested, the book has a fantastic reference section so I'll refer you there mostly, but I would like to give honorable mention to The Memory Book: The Classic Guide to Improving Your Memory at Work, at School, and at Play, also a great book on the subject. Although I personally prefer Higbee as it's much more complete (at least in terms of a reference, background, etc.) Lorayne's book has all the practical nuts and bolts of the techniques written in a more simple conversational style. Plus, there are a few techniques that appear in one that doesn't appear in the other, for example, Lorayne's "memory grid" which I've found really helpful and have used quite a bit.Okay, so that was a little long-winded but the book deserves all the praise I can give it. If I'm honest I would actually give the book 4.5 stars, only because if you're REALLY wanting to take mnemonics to absurd levels and/or compete in memory sports, some of the most advanced techniques such as the PAO system aren't covered. Still, it's a great place to start. After reading this book you will have a strong understanding of how and why of mnemonics work, as well as the tools necessary to apply them to a wide variety of contexts. These techniques have added a great deal of value to my everyday life. I can't really provide a higher compliment than that.

I purchased this book to help me study more effectively for my CPA exams. Overall I found this book to be very helpful, and I highly recommend it. I liked this book because it introduced me to some tools I had not heard of before, or had not thought to incorporate in my studying. Specifically, for me learning about the SQ3R method, and the Peg method were most helpful. I will say that the title of this book is very accurate: in each chapter the author takes time to discuss scientifically how the brain works, and then shares a specific tool to help you improve your memory. As I bought this to improve my memory I found myself skipping the scientific parts in order to get to the tips and tools. I will also say that I imagine most readers won't need every technique the author includes, and will find themselves skipping over parts of this book to get to the specific tools (i.e. you may find it easy to memorize passages of poetry or verses of scripture, but find it hard to remember names). That is fine as the book can be read cover to cover, or used as a reference tool. In conclusion, I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for tools to improve their memory and their study habits.

I read this book early when I first started undergraduate. It was interesting and I found lots of fun tricks to memorize things. However, i only saw them as tricks, and didn't really think much to apply them to my studies. I didn't really find them necessary.Ever since I entered medical school, I've become more and more conscious at my inefficient attempts to memorize material. Subconsciously I've been applying nearly all the memorization tricks, minus the pegging and loci system, to my studies and have been getting mediocre results. After an average semester, I decided to give this book a 'review' which reinforced many concepts that I had been halfway applying. Next semester I intend on consciously framing my study plan around the major principles (remembering, retaining, recalling) - and deliberately applying mnemonics and the sq3R (survey, question, read, recite, review) system to enhance my performance. I would recommend this to those who are looking to improve their grades or score in the top percentiles in the biomedical sciences.

Book provides a lot of information about different memory mnemonics used for increasing memory. The writer introduces the mnemonic, tells about its development and its use; and then tells about results people have achieved using the mnemonic. I liked the background information and the explanation of the mnemonic. I would have liked to have seen practical examples and guided use of the various mnemonics. I think Ron White in his "Memory Improvement: How to Improve Your Memory in Just 30 Days" does a much better job guiding the reader through the use of the various mnemonics. However, Kenneth Higbee does a great job providing the background.
