I found this book to be a clever way to introduce young readers to read biographies. In this first book of the series, a nine-year-old boy named Alex is texting Andy Warhol because he wants to learn about this famous artist. Alex is not yet sure about what career path he will pursue, but he does like to draw. As the conversation proceeds, readers learn about the life of Andy Warhol as well as pop art.Warhol answers the questions carefully. He tries to give a lot of information, while not steering Alex into making choices. He tells Alex not to rush making decisions and to keep an open mind. Children who do not like to read a lot of text will pick up a lot of information in the clearly delineated speech bubble format. This is especially good for beginning and reluctant readers or children with learning disabilities.
Biography of a famous artist, creatively presented in an interesting, highly readable way for children. The story incited me to research Andy Warhol further and take a look at some of his artwork, so I think it would encourage kids to do the same. I also liked the fact that it had no errors in the English, and good interview techniques are demonstrated. The only thing that would improve the book more would be for a few examples of Warhol's art to be shown.
As a fellow children's author, I love the idea behind this book series! What a creative, original idea for a nonfiction series! I like how the book was not only educational about the life and art of Andy Warhol, but also was written in a short, catchy format that even reluctant readers are likely to enjoy! Will have to check out others in the series when I get a chance.
I agree with the other reviewers: an image or two would definitely enhance this incredibly smart concept.Even if Mr Warhol's art cannot be obtained under the creative commons, I'm sure his family/foundation would gladly contribute to this (de facto purely) educational project. Perhaps we'll see some images, in an MMS or messenger form, in the next edition?
I thoroughly enjoy reading these type of children books, for they always teach my children an important life lesson in a simple and easy way that they can understand. It's important for children today to have morals, and the only way that they will obtain them is if they are taught from a young age.
This is a very creative way to get kids to explore different jobs, positions or careers. It even has me looking forward to the next book. Who will the next person be? Will it be Michaelangelo, Leonardo, Donatello or Raphael or maybe even a famous movie star, a rapper, Astronaut or an inventor. Texting is what kids love to do, and they will surely enjoy these books. I know my grandsons did.
What a creative idea for a children's series! I was, however, disappointed that there were no actual examples of Warhol's art. (That said, I also realize those images are not in the public domain.) The messages about creativity and self confidence are excellent, and presented in a way that should appeal to the target age group. (Of course, isn't pizza appealing at every age?!) Recommended!
