I enjoyed reading the interviewa in this book. In a way, the questions were fairly superficial but there are still a few nuggets in the answers. One issue I had was I wasn't convinced the author had a clear idea who she was writing for. From the title and premise of the book I would have guessed intermediate bloggers struggling to scale. Instead chapter one talks about basic how to start a blog stuff. In summarizing the three key habits, I think one more trend emerged from the answers that was not identified--no one got to 100k quickly and perservance, determination, and a ability to pivot are the real secrets to success in this business.
I'm not new to blogging, so I've read many books related to the subject. Yes! You can earn a six-figure income. However, it's not easy, and it doesn't happen quickly (usually). Sally Miller's book is not full of pretty promises that you will get rich blogging. Instead, she takes a journalistic approach to interview 17 professional bloggers who've broken the six-figure barrier and learned about their processes. In so doing, she found a pattern of three key habits that each had in common; habits that contributed to each blogger's success. I enjoyed the honesty of the book. I also recommend it to anyone curious about the blogging world.
If you've always thought you'd like to blog, and even better if your blog makes money, the place to start is with Sally Miller's basic how-to on this topic, Make Money From Blogging. Then read this book, to give you insights into exactly what to do from the start to avoid the most common pitfalls of newbie bloggers. As with every Sally Miller title, the advice is real-world, practical and actionable.Alternatively, it could be you don't want to start a money-earning blog, but you DO want a big career boost, but you're fairly fresh in your career path, not yet an 'expert.' One brilliant way to make that great leap forward it is to create an interview-style book, with you interviewing a dozen or so leaders in your industry or specialty. If this is the case, this book can serve as a model of excellence in the interview book format. The Essential Habits of 6-Figure Bloggers by Sally Miller was both a pleasure to read and an educational opportunity. Sally delivers information in an easy-to-read style backed by real-life examples from successful bloggers.The tone of the book is almost like personal coaching combined with hands-on actionable guidance. I took 9 pages of notes and wrote down 14 book recommendations to add to my TBR list, and two podcasts that I have already subscribed to.One of my favorite parts of this book is getting a deep-dive look into the experiences and thinking of successful bloggers. I am familiar with some of the blogs and bloggers in this book, but now I have many more to check out and subscribe to for their newsletters.One of my favorite take-aways was that "there is no college of blogging". That is the truth! But, this book comes close to being that college for me.I've read several books about blogging and it was refreshing to read this one because Sally Miller does not include a long beginning section about choosing a hosting site, finding a blog theme, etc. This book went right to the heart of what I have been looking for.I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in blogging.
You'll want to read this book with a notepad handy. From the first chapter, I was scribbling notes and actionable tasks. It's full of great information, and it also directs you to even more helpful resources. I have a whole list of books on my reading list, now!You know what I liked the most about this book, though? The real stories from real bloggers.So many times, we're fed "inspirational" success stories. I get tired of reading stories about bloggers who achieved "full time income" within just a few months of starting their blogs. These stories really just depress me, because I'm not seeing success fast enough. I feel like a failure. This book isn't like that.Sally brought together a collection of bloggers, who all had different journeys. They all had different experiences, and it took some of them years to finally become profitable. It may seem counter-intuitive, but that's what I find inspiring. When I'm working really hard and not seeing success yet, I know that I can make it eventually, because many other bloggers have done it before me. And many of them give the advice to keep persevering! I loved reading their stories, and thoughtful advice. This was a great book.
