I am 50 years old and am going to run my first half marathon ever in 2 days thanks to this book. Well written and thoughtful. I love the recipes. My daughter can't get enough of the cabbage salad I started making from one of the recipes. My sister and I email each other discussing snippets of insight from the book and the recipes we are making. We don't cook or bake any more. We "Jurek" our food. The ending was a little abrupt but then again his life isn't over yet so the next chapters are still being written. For anyone who loves distance running or is considering running this is a great book to read. In a world where we try to find comfort in every second it is refreshing to read about somebody uninterested in instant gratification. His toughness and determination are values I crave to see in individuals.

This book spoke to my soul!! I am a passionate vegan and I started running again after a 3 year hiatus. The combination of my plant based diet and running has helped me heal from an anxiety disorder, and my depression from my young daughter's autism diagnosis. For years I've had friends and family scoff at my diet and lifestyle. Reading this book I found extreme comfort, great food ideas, motivation, inspiration, and peace. I know I'm on the right track and this book conforms to every dream and thought that I have felt on how I want to live!

I first read this book after checking it out at the library but ended up buying it here because it was such a good read. Jurek does a good job of balancing race anecdotes with stories from his childhood and personal life. The story flows very well, making it easy to connect with. The same week I read this book I also read "Running Man" by Charlie Engle and "Finding Ultra" by Rich Roll (both of which I also loved) and would say Jurek's book ranks right up there with them as one of my favorite books. The book is informational, impressive and inspiring. Besides being amazed by the stories of Jurek's many races, I connected with and was inspired by how he overcame hardship to reach his goals. He also details changes to his diet and training as he began his career in endurance running. Highly recommend reading this book, regardless of whether or not you are a runner.

I love, love, LOVE this book! Not only is SJ an amazing athlete, but a wonderful storyteller as well. I was captivated from page one by this kind and humble soul who does not disappoint the reader with any "woe is me" tales or show boating. He accepted at a young age life was hard but was never deterred. I was captivated by his forward charging life adventures and his journey into the lifestyle of vegetarian and "endurance junkie." He includes recipes that each have their own place in his personal history and are easy to follow. I have been carrying this book with me everywhere I go, just hoping for down time at work, in waiting rooms, etc. I wish he would write more books. In the meantime, I shall have to be content with creeping his blog.

I recommend this book to any runner, especially to those who have caught the running bug and want to read about one of the greatest runners ever. I loved the advice sprinkled throughout some of which has helped me improve my running significantly. There’s also the many vegan recipes if you want that. Many sound so good I might even try some. Wonderful book, I highly recommend.

To start, Scott Jurek is not nearly as skilled a writer as Christopher McDougall so if you seek the artistry of good writing, you might be a little disappointed. Jurek writes acceptably, but clearly his first profession is running while McDougall's equally as clearly is writing. As a result, "Eat and Run" does not vividly present the characters nor contain much of a story. The book is more of a series of reports on Jurek's impressive accomplishments sprinkled with some running advice and a few recipes. (I tried two of the recipes, by the way, one worked and one did not). I would describe the book as interesting if you want a little insight into the workings of the mind of one ultramarathoner, fairly detailed accounts of some of his victories, and a bit of his personal life.

I purchased this for my husband who is training for his first ultra, and I read it myself as I used to run and still have an interest. Obviously a book about one's own success is going to be all about that person, but I found this book so overly self absorbed that I had a hard time finishing it. I love Scott's ambition and passion and he has definitely worked hard and earned his success. But beyond that I found the book to be shallow and cold. Scott barely mentions his wife other than to say he got married at some point. He talks about Dusty and his dog way more than he ever talks about the things his wife did to support him through all those years. He often criticizes other runners and repeatedly states that he can't or wont' respect someone until they've done something to earn his respect as a runner - but yet waits at the finish line to watch all the "losers" cross, and claims he shares some kind of bond with those people who he just got done talking about his dislike for. He often brings up comments or negative things people once said to or about him and uses those as justification for proving them wrong or getting back at them or rubbing it in that he's become better than them. Maybe it was just my interpretation of Scott's writing style, but I just found it all to have a bit of a negative spin. I was looking for inspiration and optimism and found myself feeling very down about it all.
