Okay, had low expectations for this one... Learned about it from a National Public Radio review and thought it sounded weird enough to take a chance - AND WERE THEY RIGHT?! This book became my obsession until I could get to the last page. Part Sci-Fi (which I love) meets Fantasy (which I also love) and a little Psychological Thriller/Horror (hints of Stephen King here) all masterfully blended together to form the perfect story that keeps you guessing about the fates of these engaging-to-the-point-of-obsession characters! One that I won't ever forget...
“Outside, the afterlife remained the same as always. Earthlike, and also dreamlike. Days came and went. Streets changed direction. The balance of Heaven and Earth followed its own inscrutable schedule. Clouds flew. Rain fell. The moon changed.â€Milo is known as being a wise man down in the Florida Keys, that is until he is eaten by a shark in the opening of this novel as another one of his lives is lost. However, that’s not such a big deal when one is given 10,000 lives; the catch is that an individual must reach “Perfection†before this cycle of reincarnation can end. After he is consumed by the shark, Milo is met on the other side once again by Death, his one true love who happens to be a simple girl named Suzie who dreams of opening a candle shop. This is a truly remarkable love story of a man’s journey as he is born time after time, failing to miss something in each previous life which prevents him from reaching his enlightened self to forever be with Suzie. The reader is taken on this ever-changing journey with Milo with each life he is given, spanning from being a bug in Ancient China to a juggler deep in the desert, a family man in Michigan to musketeer in rustic Vienna. Right when you think a tear is about to puddle in the corner of your eye, the author has a way to change that tear drop to a faint giggle by his masterful manipulation of words.
I never take the time to write a review. I'm terribly lazy. This book was incredible, though. The audio version made my year. The narrator was perfect and the blend of truly interesting storytelling and humor was exquisite. I normally read mysteries and this was a surprising and sublime departure from the same-old, same-old for me. Thank you Mr. Poore for the pleasure!
I've always been fascinated by the concept of reincarnation, and Poore's book doesn't disappoint. One minute he's got me laughing out loud, and the next minute he delivers insightful prose that makes me wonder... what is life all about? And how would I be judged as I'm living out this life (assuming the premise that we get 10,000 chances at perfection is true). This story is part romance, part adventure, part hilarity. Poore is a fabulous storyteller, and his characters ring true. Don't miss this amazing ride.
Michael Poore has a unique sense of humor that can't really be compared to anyone else's. It can't really be described, either, but I can say that it is irreverant and fun to read. The protagonist has been reincarnated almost 10,000 times and has only a few more chances to get it right. Add a romantic relationship with Death, and the story will keep you laughing. A warning, however. The language is R-rated, so this is not a book for those with sensitive ears (or eyes).
Didn't like the characters or the writing. Had to stop reading when the author mentions/ describes rape with a casual, light-hearted tone.
Milo’s bumpy and much-resisted path to perfection, complicated and enriched by his attachment to an unusual love interest, is a deliciously-told tale. Both metaphysical and quotidian in scope, this book engages one’s imagination, empathy and hope.While the story and the concepts are engaging, for me it is the soaring, tinkling, dipping and diving quality of Poole’s writing that truly won me. He’s now in the mini pantheon of authors I keep close to my heart, along with Kurt Vonnegut Jr, Neil Gaiman and Gabriel Garcia Marquez.It really is worth paying for books that are beautifully crafted and well edited.
This is the best book I’ve read in a long time. I bought it for ppl on my Christmas list and am recommending it to everyone. The spiritworld parts are sweet, sad, and funny, and the incarnations are so twisted and fascinating you forget there’s a bigger framework (probably an accurate microcosm ;)).
