Review

“Richard Brody's biography of Godard--arguably the most important, enigmatic, and exciting filmmaker of the second half of the 20th century--effortlessly weaves intellectual history, a personal saga, and an authoritative reading of the films themselves into a seamless web. It virtually crackles with intelligence, and is a must read for anyone interested in cinema.” ―Peter Biskind, author of Gods and Monsters: Thirty Years of Writing on Film and Culture“Full of lucid analysis and human context, Richard Brody's book performs a heroic act in rescuing Godard and his growing shelf of works from the prison of myth and theory, from the cult of youth and the cult of the '60s, restoring him to his place as an engaged, hard-working artist.” ―Jonathan Lethem, author of The Fortress of Solitude“Godard changed the movies as much as the American masters he grew up on: Welles, Hawks, Hitchcock, and the rest. He is as original as Picasso--but unlike Picasso, he has been denied the biography he has always deserved. This is it. Just at the moment when the New Wave turns fifty, Richard Brody has given us Everything is Cinema, a remarkable book which describes with sharp intelligence a great and elusive artist's times, intellect, passions, and work.” ―Wes Anderson, writer and director of Rushmore, The Royal Tenenbaums, and The Life Aquatic“Everything Is Cinema is better than a biography, it is a novel. And a great novel, in which one discovers the story of a man who almost picked the wrong art form, a struggling writer who became an immense filmmaker.” ―Bernard-Henri Lévy, author of American Vertigo

Extremely insightful text, heavy with citations, interviews and whatnot. Mr Brody's tremendous work shines throughout its almost 700 pages. Highly recommended to whoever cares for cinema, particularly "art movies".

Great! Exhaustive portrait of the artist. Worth buying if just for the fist 200 pages where you get the feel for Jean-Luc's meteoric rise. Will return to it time to time.

One of the best books on Goddard that I've read!

I was glad to get a book about Godard's work and not a boring read about early family upbringing and struggles. This will appeal to aficionados of Jean-Luc's difficult cinema. It's like having a documentary about all of his films. Brody's writing is detailed and gets to the heart of the matter, just like his New Yorker pieces. I read it slowly to savor each chapter and movie. It's a must-read for filmmakers and students of the director.

The thing that struck me as I read this was that Brody seems more enamored of the idea of what he thinks Godard was doing as an artist than he is with the actual films he made - at least with the films he made during the first decade or so. Colin MacCabe's Godard: A Portrait of the Artist at Seventy seems more readable and more able to see the films as something other than opaque autobiography. Needless to say either book will tell you more than you ever wanted to know about Godard's personal life, although MacCabe, unlike Brody, shows some reticence in exploring his love life.

Dedicated, passionate, illuminating portrait of a body of work in motion.

Great product... great seller, hope to do nussines in the future... thanks :)

"(Richard Brody's) Everything is Cinema", famous French philosopher Bernard-Henri Lévy is quoted as commenting on the back cover, "is better than a biography, it is a novel". Fiction, in other words. I prefer to invoke the title of a Charles Mingus composition, viz "All the things you'd be by now if Sigmund Freud's wife were your mother": Over nearly 600 pages, page by page, precisely and adoringly, emerges the profile of a total neurotic, a mysogenist misanthrope, a miser.A bit of a private life component may be the spice of a biography, but if nothing else but his private (ie off-screen) life is advanced to determine and explain all of Godard's films and video activities, the reader tires rather quickly: In the end, Le mépris (1963) is an excellent and intelligent film because Alberto Moravia's underlying novel is great (sociological rather than psychological) analysis, and Godard a skilled and innovative metteur en scene. Some things are irrelevant, like his failed alliance with a relatively more mature Marina Vlady - Anne-Marie Miéville, the author rightly remarks, will be the first and only of Godard's women of equal caliber. And whether Godard held hands with Brigitte Bardot walking up the stairs of Curzio Malaparte's avant-gardist villa is about as irrelevant as his "accusation" of François Truffaut of having had a candid affair with Jacqueline Bisset during the turning of La nuit américaine (1973), and not showing it in that movie... ("how come only the director has no affair in that film?").Brody's method of endless narration makes it difficult for him, and subsequently the reader, to in any defined way assess the weight/quality of Godard's individual films. This is perhaps the main weakness of the book. Also, it contains a series of factual errors in the assessment of the bitter feud with Truffaut, which (as can be read up in the latter's many biographies) was basically instigated by Godard's vile and foul sneering. Truffaut was not the only one who got that treatment, but he is the one who most decidedly stood up against the intellectual smear campaign. Not an easy subject; a wealth of material, well written without any doubt, but still: not going anywhere in particular. fbus 37 - Everything Is Cinema: The Working Life of Jean-Luc Godard by Richard Brody - 26/6/2012

Review

"This book is one of the few available examples of its kind that succeeds in presenting a broad scale approach to India's complex histories. It achieves this while combining a useful chronological framework with key themes covering not just political events, but also economic contexts, constitutional reform, and cultural transformations. In this sense it is of enormous value as both an introduction to India and as a reference point for those revisiting its politics, culture, society and economy." William Gould, University of Leeds, UK

Although this book provides a thorough and comprehensive rendition of the history of India, it is not for the casual traveler. Its verbage is very dense and reflects the sentence and vocabulary of non-native english speakers. Consequently, the intent of some sentences is difficult to discern immediately. It is a scholarly work but a challenge to plow through.

This book is mercifully brief on the deconstruction of literary sources that South Asian area studies are prone to and (again quoting the on-target cover copy) "emphasises and analyses the structural pattern of Indian history." I wish it was longer than 335 pages. The first 2/3 of the book covers the pre-British period -- a good fraction. While relating more of the military viscitudes than I would like, there is some consideration of social, religious, and economic issues as well as ruling strategies. And the focus on 'great empires' is less than in most Indian histories, which is good since India has spent much more time disunited than united.Kulke and Rothermund break with the Hindu/Islamic/British periodization of Indian history, breaking periods before the Guptas and before the Mughals. All in all, it is a substantial improvement over Romila Thapar's effort, and a huge improvement over Stanley Wolpert's book.

I love everything about this book. Such a great way to start moving towards a more plant based diet. It is fun, easy to read, and informative without being pushy. It encourages moving as far and as fast as you want towards a healthier planet, body and your health along the path of more plants and less animal products. It is loaded with recommendations, recipes and ways to replace meat and still enjoy eating to the max.I would highly recommend this book. I got the hardcover and I love the beautiful purple cover.

A healing, helpful guidebook for our hungry planet. If you are already plant-curious, or wonder why your friends are, this wonderful book provides a fantastic introduction into the why and how of eating plant-based a bit more frequently…as Suzy says, just “One Meal A Day” (OMD).Suzy is the perfect guide into this subject, and illustrates with easy-to-read examples how OMD begins to bend the curve on human and environmental health. OMD makes it easy for even those of us who prefer to procrastinate on making any changes to begin adapting a healthier, plant-based diet by taking small, simple steps.I really appreciate Suzy’s commonsense approach to this subject, and found that her practical 14-day transition menu plan was especially helpful. If you are interested in exploring the human and environmental benefits of eating plant-based just one meal per day, this book is a great place to start on that journey. Nothing better than learning how to improve your health and the planet's one delicious bite at a time!

I just ordered my book! I have been on a 95% plant-based diet for nearly 3 years now and my energy is amazing and I feel great! I have also seen a huge improvement in my digestion! I am truly excited to read this and keep learning how I can improve the world I live in, in my small way, ONE MEAL AT A TIME! ❤️😊👍🏻

Changing One Meal A Day (OMD) helps approach necessary food choices with creativity and practical advice. It's a call to action for our bodies, our planet and our kids. Suzy offers great tips and recipes makes this transformation doable.

The book is good in the sense that the diet recommended is 10x better than your standard American diet. The way it is written is ditzy and apparent a former model wrote it. It seems like she cherry-picked data and left out facts like how if you eat enough fruits and veggies it's an antidote to the bad stuff in meat. She also didn't acknowledge that the earth is on it's own cycle and global warming is inevitable (yes, we still can help but the difference isn't statistically huge). She left out the facts that the main polluters are India and China. I still think the Mediterranean diet is the best diet out there.

Way too much background and testimonials. Recipes ok. If you know much at all about the subject this won’t add to your knowledge

Interesting and not at all preachy. Some of the recipes require ingredients that we can't get easily where I live.

Amazing read. Such a simple plan, yet, so powerful. Suzy does a great job outlining the problem and offering simple solutions to save the planet and your health.

Review

“A masterpiece of translation.” - Rowan Williams, University of Cambridge“A revelation. Never have I been so aware at once of the beauty of the poetry, the physicality of Homer’s world, and the moral ambiguity of those who inhabit it.” - Susan Chira, New York Times Book Review“Emily Wilson’s crisp and musical version is a cultural landmark.… This translation will change the way the poem is read in English.” - Charlotte Higgins, Guardian“In the history of Odyssey translations, few have exerted such a cultural influence that they become ‘classics’ in their own right.… I predict that Emily Wilson will win a place in this roll-call of the most significant translations of the poem in history. She certainly deserves the honour.” - Edith Hall, Daily Telegraph“Emily Wilson has given us a staggeringly superior translation―true, poetic, lively and readable, and always closely engaged with the original Greek―that brings to life the fascinating variety of voices in Homer’s great epic.” - Richard F. Thomas, Harvard University“When I first read these lines…, I was floored. I’d never read an Odyssey that sounded like this. It had such directness, the lines feeling not as if they were being fed into iambic pentameter because of some strategic decision but because the meter was a natural mode for its speaker.” - Wyatt Mason, New York Times Magazine“In her powerful new translation, Emily Wilson… has chosen immediacy and naturalism over majestic formality. She preserves the musicality of Homer’s poetry, opting for an iambic pentameter whose approachable storytelling tone invites us in, only to startle us with eruptions of beauty.… Wilson’s transformation of such a familiar and foundational work is… astonishing.” - Rebecca Newberger Goldstein, Atlantic“Wilson’s translation is a superb achievement and a striking departure from the tradition of Homeric translation into English.… There is no elaborate or antiquated diction, just a crispness and clear-headedness that will seem quite alien to anyone familiar with earlier versions.… Wilson has produced a wonderfully distinctive―and modern―version of the poem.” - Henry Power, Evening Standard“Irresistibly readable, Wilson’s Odyssey turns Homeric epic into a poetic feast.” - Froma Zeitlin, Princeton University“This translation is a marvel! Bold and timely and ever so exciting.… As majestic as literature gets.” - Max Porter, author of Grief Is the Thing With Feathers

3.5 stars would be more precise, for me. But this is a welcome addition to my home Classics shelf. The book is beautifully produced with a terrific introduction and notes. And the translation, in iambic pentameter, rips right along, using mostly 1 and 2-syllable Anglo-Saxon words. Well and good, in its way. But it's also deliberately flat, not even attempting an epic tone or register. I agree completely that no translation can mirror or equal the original. But the translations that work for me offer a sense of the original spirit and style. The key question, to my way of thinking, is this: was the original poem a racy and rip-along performance...or was it, well, epic and resonant and grand?Reservations aside, I still recommend this translation to those who've read other versions.

Part of the reason I purchased this book was because I liked the cover art, but I got so much more. At least an extra 100 pages were added just to help set up the world, and explain the setting. I couldn't help but laugh when I read he lifted a branch to cover his "manly private parts."

This ancient, confusing, and heart-rending epic is illuminated by Emily Wilson's no nonsense feminine perspective. I think it may revolutionize our understanding of the entire period. Beautiful piece of work.

I have read three different translations of the Odyssey, and this one is by far the best. It captures (as far as I can tell) the rythem of the original language, in strait forward cadence. This is the version to own.

Perfection!

This translation feels dull and tedious. It may have better application for grade school classrooms. I just finished Richmond Lattimore's Illiad translation and was so moved by the text I couldn't wait to get started on the Odyssey. I hardly got a few paragraphs into Emily Wilson's translation when I decided to put it down and buy Lattimore's Odyssey. I'm utterly puzzled as to why this translation is so popular at the moment.

I keep fearing that the author my release his last book. However he fails to disappoint. Another classic covering virtually every topic is melded into a patch work of short offerings to The New Yorker length articles. Having been watched by Albert Einstein while playing soccer to discussing the NBA with Bill Bradley, the author has experienced an endless range of persons, personalities, and topics for his musings. If you are true John McPhee fan (I have yet to read 2 of his books) then the most accurate review is to say that the author "strikes again" and "fails to disappoint." Enjoy the exploration into another of John McPhee's offerings. PS: I will never look at a female Cardinal like I use to.

I long ago promised that I would read anything John McPhee wrote, if he would just keep writing. For my trouble, I learned more about that damn fish than I ever wanted to know, but I read it all. I didn't think I would care for the second half of this book, which consists of many brief, unconnected bits of narrative and description. But I did. Very much. It raised this question: why in prospect did it seem in any way unacceptable for a nonfiction writer to present several isolated pieces as a tour de force when a photographer / sculptor / painter might do the same (as in a gallery or a portfolio) without prompting a single raised eyebrow? In retrospect, I think, "Why not?" This works. And it's really neat.

I love John McPhee's writing. But these snippets of larger pieces leave me unsatisfied; where's the rest? There's enough material hidden here for another half dozen books, which I hope to read, in full, in the near future.

"A thousand details add up to one impression."-- Cary Grant, quoted in John McPhee's 'The Patch'"...an interloper [at Princeton], a fake professor, a portfolio without minister."-- Robert Fagles & Robert Hollander, both describing John McPheeIn my Goodreads "About Me" I'm pretty blunt:"I won't review your self-published book. I promise. Even if your book is published by a traditional publishing house (Penguin, etc), I'm not going to read and review it UNLESS I've read you before (most likely). If your name is Thomas Pynchon, Don DeLillo, John le Carré, Robert Caro, John McPhee, etc., sure... PLEASE send me ALL your books. I'm totally game. Otherwise, you are just wasting both of our time."That usually scares away most self-published prose pimps, but the other day I landed a REAL fish. Someone at Farrar, Straus and Giroux sent me a quick note complimenting me (I'm a whore for compliments) AND asking if I wanted a soon-to-be-published book by John McPhee to read, enjoy, and yes ... perhaps ... review? My kids would tell you that in a choice between meeting John McPhee and God, I'd be hard pressed to choose, because to me John McPhee IS GOD. So, of course I took the book. I got it a couple days ago and just finished it today.Lovely. The book is essentially a memoir, told through prose patches and resurrected scratches. Pieces that have been overlooked or published and never reprinted were culled, edited, and sewn together (at 87, there is a lot of past prose to examine).Part I of the book contains six sporting essays that range from fishing for pickerel in New Hampshire (The Patch), to chasing errant golf balls (The Orange Trooper), to golf at St. Andrews (Linksland and Bottle), to coach Bill Tierney (Princeton's and later Denver's) championship lacrosse coach (Pioneer).Part II is essentially a collection of small pieces (some just a paragraph, others several pages) that seem random. They span McPhee's interests and curiosities from people, to places, to science, sports, and errata. It is only as these patches come together that you begin to realize McPhee is essentially taking you on a trip through his memory as a writer, a father, and a person. McPhee's talent as a writer bubbles up, but so too does McPhee's essential humanity. His narrative nonfiction informs, seduces, and entertains.McPhee, along with Tom Wolfe, Gay Talese, etc., helped spread New Journalism through his essays and books. His writing is curiosity distilled with patience + carefully filtered through literary prose + reduced with McPhee's unique talent of observing the crucial character in the perfect place at the exact right time. It is a gift from a literary starets, a psalm from our desert father of nonfiction. In this book McPhee is unfolding a quilt whose patern slowly transforms into McPhee. It is a love note from a father to his family (the book is dedicated to his 10 grandchildren) and most certainly to his readers and fans.

Over the years, I've read everything by McPhee, who has always been my favorite nonfiction author. This book just reinforced my opinion.

As usual John McPhee did not disappoint.

I love John McPhee’s writing and perspective.

#530,848 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

It is good to see a doctor finally reflect on what has become of psychiatry. We need more champions for the art and science of psychotherapy. Daniel Carlat has made a good start by showing that psychiatry has become little more than a blind, often negligent, pill-pushing caste. Although he does see medication as having a place in treating mental illness he nonetheless acknowledges the dearth of true psychotherapy.I suspect such a book may not be popular among psychiatrists but truth is painful and it's high time someone came out to remind them what patients expect and deserve... real, humane treatment.Kudos to Dr. Carlat... now we need more whistle-blowers to shed true insight into just how damaging many of the meds are and that continue to be prescribed at an alarming rate.

It's not news that the profession of psychiatry is in a crisis state. There have been many books, articles, and blogs written criticizing psychiatry. There's no shortage of things to criticize. The fact that there is little understanding of the neurobiology of psychopathology, that there are no diagnostic tests for psychiatric disorders, that drugs have become widely prescribed with little evidence supporting their long-term efficacy, that most psychiatrists have become exclusively pill pushers, eschewing the need to understand and connect to their patients beyond a 15 minute med check, and that many psychiatrists have allowed themselves to be corrupted by drug money, are some of the problems with contemporary psychiatry.Daniel Carlat, in his book, provides an insider's look at the problems with psychiatry. Carlat was motivated to pursue a career in psychiatry because of his depressed mother's suicide. Carlat did his residency at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), beginning in 1992, after the introduction of second generation antidepressants like Prozac. Although his supervisors were divided between therapy and drug advocates, Carlat admits that "the main thing you learn in a psychiatric residency, then or now, is how to write prescriptions" (p. 34).After completing his residency, Carlat, like most psychiatrists of his generation, specialized in psychopharmacology, i.e. prescribing drugs. He saw patients for 15 to 20 minute medication visits. The reason why he and other psychiatrists did this was that it was more profitable. Seeing three patients an hour for med checks allowed him to make about $180 an hour minus expenses. Seeing one patient an hour for therapy allowed him to make between $80 to $100 an hour, which is about 50% less.Carlat talks about his experiences as a "hired gun," someone who is paid (i.e. bought out) by drug companies. Carlat worked for Wyeth Pharmaceuticals to promote the antidepressant drug Effexor to primary care doctors. He made $750 per talk. He describes that although he was officially an "expert consultant," in reality he was basically a highly-credentialed salesman. Sales reps attended his talks, and they communicated to him via body language and other feedback whether he was doing what they expected of him, i.e. to promote their product. When he tried to be more balanced and neutral, they criticized him. He eventually gave up his hired gun position.Carlat describes his own experiences as a target of the pharmaceutical marketing machine. Ambien, a sleeping pill marketed by Sanofi-Aventis, was going off patent soon. Safoni-Aventis wanted doctors to prescribe Ambien CR ("Controlled Release"), a longer-acting drug than the original. Carlat was skeptical of the science behind the new pill. Valerie, his drug sales rep, knew that he wasn't prescribing much Ambien CR. Valerie was persistent, offering a free medical textbook as a gift. Carlat prescribed Ambien CR to a patient, subconsciously or consciously reciprocating Valerie's gift. The patient didn't like the drug due to a hangover side effect. Carlat didn't tell his patient that he prescribed Ambien CR as a favor to a drug rep.Carlat talks about the overdiagnosis of psychiatric disorders. The DSM-IV, the "bible" of psychiatry, classifies mental disorders based on a list of symptoms. If you have five of the symptoms it mentions, you have depression. If you only have four, you don't have depression. Since this symptom-based diagnosis is ultimately based on subjective or arbitrary factors, there is no way to prevent multiplication or redefinition of disorders. The problems with the DSM also affect clinical practice. For example, bipolar disorder is a diagnosis in the DSM based on symptoms such as alternating manic and depressive episodes. This diagnosis was intended for adults and older teenagers. Joseph Biederman and his colleagues at MGH decided to expand the diagnosis of bipolar disorder to toddlers. In 1996, Biederman published a paper reporting that nearly a quarter of children he was treating for ADHD also met his criteria for bipolar disorder. His diagnostic change led to a forty-fold increase in the number of children and adolescents treated for bipolar disorder. What is Carlat's prescription for change in his broken profession? Carlat wants psychiatrists to go back to providing therapy, which can be balanced with medications. 15 minute medication checks are not sufficient to get to know a patient, to know what makes him tick. Sometimes changes in symptoms are not due to medications but life changes or stresses. Since most psychiatrists don't have time to inquire about anything other than symptoms and medications, they are blind to what is going on in their patients' lives. Carlat changed his own practice from exclusively 15-20 minute med checks, to somewhat longer medication sessions (20- 25 minutes), alternating with 45 minute therapy visits. He doesn't use traditional psychodynamic therapy, but instead "a version of supportive therapy that I now try to weave into the fabric of all my sessions with patients, whether they are seeing me primarily for medications or for therapy" (p. 199).Carlat assumes that drugs are effective. In his book, he gives a number of case examples of patients whom he says were helped by medications he prescribed. But how does he know that? His conclusions about drug effectiveness are based on his own clinical observations, which derive from 15 to 25 minute appointments. How can he, or any other psychiatrist, make any conclusion about effectiveness based on such short patient visits, and in the absence of any objective lab tests? In conclusion, this book is a well-written, honest account of systemic problems in psychiatry written by someone with an insider's perspective on the profession. Carlat does an excellent job describing the drug money corruption in psychiatry, in the overmedicalized view of a complicated phenomenon such as mental illness, and in the need for psychiatrists to better know their patients and provide some of them with therapy. He fails, however, to go far enough in questioning drug efficacy.

This is a great story regarding the selling of the psychiatric industry. Dr. Carlat does a great job explaining the problems with modern psychiatric drug trials, the immense problem with conflict of interest among the "researchers" and offers some ideas for how to change. It's important that medicine is as nonbiased as possible and we get back to finding what is best for our patients lives, and not about padding our pocket books. Thank-you, Dr. Carlat

I would recommend this book to anyone interested in the field of psychiatry. It brings to light the controversies that plague the profession. It offers solutions. It is very easy to read but also engaging. It is educational. I enjoyed reading this book.

What an eye-opener! This is for ANYONE who is visiting a doctor for emotional problems. The trend in this area is to "medicate", without much effort in solving your problem! BEWARE!

I enjoyed this book for its honesty about what the flaws are of psychiatry and for the hope it provides for the future of the field.

An eye opening reminder of what has become of the medical profession. It is a perfect representation of the evolution of what used to be a "helping profession" into one focused on making money in addition to dependent clients.Highly recommended for anyone in or entering mental health, but I may also purchase a copy for my general practitioner as well!

Dr. Carlat discusses the breakthroughs and drawbacks of modern psychiatry. His main criticism is the shift from therapy to psychopharmacology within the field, in which doctors no longer offer hour-long therapy sessions for their clients, favoring the 15 minute "med check" model instead. Carlat also sheds light on the issue of drug industry influence on doctor's research and prescription habbits, including Carlat's own experience as a paid spokesman for Wyeth (makers of the Effexor antidepressant) and the pressure put on him by the company to influence other doctors' opinions about the drug.I found it to be a very interesting book, I had trouble putting it down!

I'm loving this series, although I suspect I'm going to burn through them quickly. Sigh. Okay, so without revealing too much of the plot, I'd have to say that if your wife goes out and buys YOU a coffin and insists on keeping it in the living room you should probably....RUN!
