When Sheriff Ben Stillman decides to take a few days off and accompany Judge John Bannon and friends to a wedding in Sulfur, Montana Territory, things can go wrong in a hurry. Angus Whateley, a crazy ex-confederate, just released from prison, decides he wants revenge for the hanging of his cattle rustling sons, hangings ordered by Judge Banning. What follows is a story that I had trouble putting down. Edge of your seat from the very beginning. I will not spoil the book by adding anything else, except to say - "Read this one. Ben Stillman at his best".
Good old-fashioned Western. The story is interesting--a family taking extreme action to avenge the wrongful hanging of two of their sons. Unfortunately for the family, Marshall Ben Stillman gets caught up in the middle of their plans. This sets the stage for plenty of action. An enjoyable story for Western fans. Four stars might be little generous, but fresh classic Westerns are rare and I believe they deserve a little extra consideration.
An excellent book, it was hard to put it down. The vastness and variety of old western landscape that was traveled is described very well. The author has you feeling like you are right there in the heat, the dust, the cold rain and snow. I looked up some more of his books and bought them for my Kindle. I believe Peter Brandevold is possibly close to the same esteemed author level as F.M. Parker and Louie L'Amour.
Have read most of the series...good books
This is a fast action western with twist, and turns. Well written and laid out, with a great ending. I loved it.
A good Western novel
I love all Peter Brandvold - Stillman books - this one seemed different than the previous in this series but it was not really the same type as the others - liked it - did not Love it
Decent average western but drags a lot in between meaningful parts of the main plot. I was tempted to skip ahead a few times as some of it was plainly boring.
