MICHELLE LYNN SENTERS (B.A. Education; M.Ed. Integrated Teaching Through the Arts) raised two daughters on her own and experienced many issues common to single mothers: financial crisis, emotional trauma in children, pursuit of education, isolation from church, feelings of guilt/shame, consequences of fatherlessness, and the challenges of relationships and remarriage. Her message has been forged in her own journey as a single mom and has deepened through her years of mentoring single moms and launching ministries geared to them in the local church. She founded the Arise Ministry for Single Moms at her local church in Colorado Springs and this ministry is being considered by other area churches. She is a sought-after speaker at women's events, Bible studies, and writer's conferences.

Michelle is married to my son, Jeff, and as a consequence, I was privileged to read her chapters as she would finish them, and offer my comments. I found her writing to be so beautiful, flowing, and elegant, and so inspired by the Spirit of God, that it often took my breath away. I told her I wished I could have had this book when I was raising Jeff, and his brother Jerry, as a single mom. Her chapters, each one as they unfolded, brought back so many memories of my struggles and loneliness. I shed a good many tears reading her words because I could relate so well to her experiences. This is a must-read book for single moms. There is no doubt in my mind that her words will soothe, heal, comfort, encourage and guide those moms who need to know that they are not alone in their struggles and loneliness. Her use of Scripture throughout is so stunning, as she finds just the right verse or passage to capture and enlighten her experiences and comfort and encourage the reader. This is a truly amazing book, not just for single moms, but also for those lonely or discouraged souls who need to know they can be loved and saved by turning their lives over to God.
So many Christian single mom books seem to be more about self help and to do lists that leave you feeling more helpless with added stress, trying to get to that place these books show. This book doesn't do that. Michelle writes her book in a raw way, meeting you where you are, in the hard times. You do not feel pressured, stressed, or feel like nothing will get better because adding more to do is impossible. Reading this book, I felt seen. I was able to relate and apply the knowledge I gained. There was no to do list or steps. God meets us where we are, not where we will be when we figure it all out. He really spoke through Michelle, showing me that I am His daughter and no matter how big my mess or how hard my struggles, He is with me all the while, counting my tears, holding me close, and guiding me through this single mom life.
I haven't read a book in years but when I saw this I had to buy it. I'm a single mom to 4 year old twins and sometimes the loneliness gets the best of me. When I opened this book I could immediately relate; and that was just within the first few pages. I'm still reading it and I'm learning a lot and seeing things from a much different perspective. I've also presented this to my church so that we might be able to do a single mom's book study with it. There's questions after each chapter that are great for gaining an even deeper understanding.
This book was an answered prayer if there ever was one. Not only have I rediscovered the true love God has for me, but I have been reminded that I am not alone in my struggles as a single mother and that hope abounds through Jesus Christ. Thank you, Michelle, for your life experience and wisdom that God allowed you to endure and prosper from. I pray this work and your testimony touches the hearts of many other single mothers like me, and I thank God for bringing this book into my experience to help me when I needed it most. Thank you! The 'Homebuilding 101' section at the end of each chapter helps to apply the practical, life-giving tools taught throughout. These questions offer time for reflection, journaling, and group discussion.Time and time again the Unseen Companion hits the mark right on the center of God's truth, constantly reminding the reader, "You are not alone."
I just started reading this book few days ago and I want to thank you for sharing. The first few chapters made me weep only because it sounded like I actually wrote those pages. I was compelled to thank my King of kings, comforter, friend of sinners. I just wish there were more supports in churches for single mothers. We are too often overlooked. I am glad the Unseen Companion never overlook. This is a awesome book for every woman young and old. There is the class of "single married women" who will benefit from reading this book as well.
I am so thankful this book was placed in my hands! Michelle Senters has a huge heart for single mamas, and this book has tremendously benefitted me as a married mom as well. We all need encouragement and the reminder that God is with us always. These chapters are filled with Michelle's personal stories, encouraging scripture, and practical ways in which to deal with daily struggles and how to enrich our home life, ultimately building a legacy of faith in our family and drawing closer to God. I love her sense of humor, her openness, and her honesty. I like how you don't necessarily need to read the book in order, but can turn to a particular chapter you may be needing guidance in on a particular day- Rest, Healing, Provision, Balance, Identity, Conpanionship, Protection, Peace, or Love. Not sure there are words to say how much I love this book. I've had to put it down to reflect with tears in my eyes on numerous occasions - it's amazing how often we feel so alone and then find out other people have the same struggles and that the Unseen Companion never leaves us.
